House fire in
Egmondville
Shaun Gregory
Huron Expositor
Close to every member of Sea-
forth's Huron East Fire Dept.
detachment were called to a blaze
in Egmondville at about 3:15 a.m.
Feb 10.
On Highway 12, the yellow brick
home was engulfed in flames when
responders arrived, said Marty Bed-
ard, the Fire Chief for Huron East.
Luckily, Bedard said the smoke
alarm went off, waking up the
owner of the house, leaving him
enough time to escape with his dog.
"He woke up and saw his couch
on fire," Bedard stated in a phone
interview at noon Feb 10.
"Smoke alarms do their jobs, if it
didn't wake him up, it would have
been something different that's for
sure."
It took a few hours to completely
extinguish the blaze, however
when the Expositor arrived at 1
p.m. a fire crew was still on the
scene putting out hot spots with
water.
According to Bedard the house is
a total loss and the cause may
potentially been from a wood -
burning stove. If true,. this is the
second fire caused by a woodstove
in the area in the last four weeks.
"You have to know what you're
doing with the woodstove that's for
sure," stated Bedard.
"You have to maintain them and
keep them clean."
