Area skater with local ties
wins gold at National Figure
Skating Championships
London's Evelyn Walsh
and Belleville -born Trennt
Michaud, who train at the
London Competitive Skating
Centre, captured the junior
pairs crown at the Canadian
national figure skating
championships on Wednes-
day, Jan. 18 in Ottawa.
Walsh has a number of
local connections; she's the
daughter Brad and Jayne
(Delaney). Jayne grew up in
Dublin and now teaches at
St. Anne's Secondary
School in Clinton. Brad
recently retired from his
teaching job at Mitchell's
Upper Thames Elementary
School (UTES). Evelyn was

15 year-old Evelyn is cur-
rently ranked 12th in the
junior women's division in
Canada. However she also
began skating as a pair with
Michaud Last July.
On the recent win, Evelyn
said, "It feels really great. We
still have things to work on,
but we thought we skated a
solid (long) program."
Michaud defended his
title, winning last year with

They scored 99.51 points

goals for the rest of this year
are to add a triple -twist trick
and break the 100 -point
barrier.

Felicia Tiesma is only 10
years old, but that doesn't
mean she can't do her part
in helping others. She dem-
onstrated that recently by
raising $1800 for Hunter
Costello, a toddler from
Goderich whom she has
never met.
Tiesma first heard about
Hunter, who is fighting leu-
kemia, after her great aunt
bought her a stuffed animal
from a local pharmacy that
was selling them as a fund-
raiser for Hunter and his
family.
Tiesma's mom, Eunice,
said, "The week after that,
she mentioned Hunter to
me many times and finally
she said, 'I want to raise
money for Hunter and his
family:"
She made .a goal; she
would raise $1500 or dye
her hair blue.
Money came in from
family, friends, cowork-
ers, and friends of friends
from across Ontario.
However part way
through fundraising, it
became evident that if
she wanted to reach her
goal, she would have to
try a new technique. That
was when she decided to
sell her grandmother's
homemade Portuguese
bread for donations.
Her and her grandma
were able to make and sell
29 loaves of bread together,
putting her well over her
$1500 goal at $1800.
She did not have to dye
her hair.
Tiesma was able to
meet Hunter's grand-
parents'; I-Iunter
