Mary Helen Van Loon is
no stranger to the workings
of the Huron -Perth Catholic
District School Board.
And the newest trustee
on the board, representing
Perth South, West Perth
and St. Marys, says her
familiarity was one of the
reasons she wanted to get
involved.
"When this opportunity
came up, I thought 'I know
the workings of the board; so
I can make this work," she
said. "I'm excited to get
involved and continue to
witness their Catholic vision
and focus and be a part of all
that."
In accordance with a
vacancy for the position of
trustee after the death of
longtime trustee and former
chair Bernard Murray last
October, the board hosted an
open interview process for
stakeholders, and Van Loon
was one of five "exemplary
candidates" to be
interviewed.
Candidates were asked to
submit a resume with quali-
fications and participate in
an interview.
In a press release from the
board, Van Loon brings "a
deep commitment to the
Catholic faith" and "a
breadth of experience"
within the school system
and throughout Huron and
Perth counties.

\ he twinned elementary
schools in St. Columban
and Dublin, and on a con-
tract basis taking minutes
for board meetings at the
board's Dublin headquar-
ters 30 years ago, she noted.
She worked as a school sec-
retary at St. Patrick's in Dub-
lin and in 2004 accepted a
position as an administra-
tive assistant in the HR
department at the board
office but, two years later,
left that position after her
son Greg was killed in a traf-
fic accident.
Since then, she has been
active in the Catholic com-
munity participating and
leading grief counselling
group sessions, and more
recently as the chair of the
parish council for the St.
James/St. Patrick churches.
She has also returned to the
two elementary schools as a
volunteer.
Van Loon and her hus-
band Mike have farmed near
Dublin for 37 years, and
once the current term
expires, will decide if run-
ning in the next election is
something she'll consider.
