Habitat for Humanity Huron looking for families, volunteers

There will be plenty of opportuni-
ties - including picking up a hammer
and saw - as Seaforth prepares to
build a Habitat for Humanity house
on Sparling Street next year, says
Habitat Huron board member Paul
Dyk.
With a $25,000 lot recently bought
_from the municipality of Huron East,
a sign has gone up at the site of the
future build and Habitat for Human-
ity is in the process of gathering vol-
unteers who want to help out.
Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler has re-
cently been named the Seaforth proj-
ect build chair and will oversee the
project.
"The local face is so valuable," says
Dyk, adding that Steffler will be
building a leadership committee and
a volua.nteer base.
"Seaforth already has a few volun-
teers in the Habitat for Humanity
data base, which has 300-400 vol-
unteers across the county. Not too
many are from Seaforth but the data
base tends to fill up once we get to a
new community," says Dyk.
A steering committee meeting was
held recently in Seaforth with anoth-
er planned for June 22 at 7:30 p.m.
at Northside United Church. Anyone
who wants to volunteer in any capac-
ity is invited to attend the June 22
meeting.

for the service clubs to get involved -
they're a targetted organization that
have traditionally come forward to
help us," he says.
Steffler says the St. Anne's Second-
ary School construction class, which .
helped build the foundation for the
Exeter Habitat house, has already
volunteered to do the same at the
Seaforth build.
"They'll be in charge of everything
to the top of the basement wall. They
did it in three days in Exeter - why
reinvent the wheel," says Stefier,
adding that St. Anne's has volun-
teered to build a garden shed for the
house as well.
Dyk says Habitat for Human-
ity Huron has invited all the high
schools in the county to start up a
campus Habitat chapter to get in-
volved in Huron County builds.
With the lot bought, Dyk says the
next steps include finding families
who qualify to apply to become the
residents of the new house and fund-
raising $50,000 in cash and $35,000
in services or "in kind gifts" from lo-
cal builders and suppliers.
Low income families with a to-
tal family income ranging between
$20,000 and $35,000 who can afford
a no -interest mortgage and are will-
ing to contribute their "sweat equity"
towards the build are invited to ap-
ply. _
"We're really trying to put the word
out so we get a lot of applicants,"
says Habitat' board member Wendy
Hutton, of Seaforth.
"We need all the applications by the
end of September so we can select
the family by the end of the year,"
she adds.
A meeting will be held for inter-
ested families at Northside United
Church on Monday, June 29 at 7:30
p.m. presenting information on eligi-
bility and how to go about applying.
Application forms will be available
at the meeting.
Interested families and volunteers
can also contact Steffler at 519-527-
2389 or Hutton at 519-522-0646.
