Teammates participate to remember Hill's grandmother and Simsonsen's mother
p p
Laura Pethick, a Canadian Can-
cer Society fundraising co-ordinator,
says the motto for the event is "Cel-
ebrate, remember and fight back."
"It's hard to hold back the tears,"
Pethick says. "There are some people
there who have been fighting cancer
for 15 years and others who are at
the beginning of their fight."
Pethick says all the money raised
by participants will go toward the
Canadian Cancer Society's mission
statement of eradicating cancer and
improving the quality of life among
those who are living with the disease
through research and promoting ser-
vices.
Along with Goderich, Listowel,
Stratford and Wingham are also
hosting Relay for Life events this
year.
Across Ontario, 700,000 people
are expected to participate in 106
communities. Pethick says it is esti-
mated that $19 million will be raised -
through the events.

Fighting cancer is one of the scri-
est things a person can go through
and the Relay for Life event is one
way friends and family can help sup-
port their struggle, a member of the
Seaforth team the Disney Mates said
last week.
Brenda Hill first participated in
the Canadian Cancer Society event
two years ago, when her grandmoth-
er Jean Hill was still alive and bat-
tling the disease.
She lost her fight with cancer in
March 2008, but Brenda says she
plans to keep her grandmother's
• memory alive by taking part in the
Relay for Life_ for many years to
come.
"Nothing will stop - me," she says.
"I'm going to do it for as long as I
can."
Last year, Hill raised $225 in
pledges and just recently held a Tup-
perware fundraiser at her house
that raised $160 for this year's relay
team.
Her teammate, Tabitha Simonsen,
who started the Disney Mates two
years ago after losing her mother
Ruth Maier to lung cancer in 2006,
is hoping the team can raise about
$7,000 before the Relay for Life event
in Goderich begins on June 19-20.
Simonsen and some of , her co-
workers at E.D. Smith in Seaforth,
who are also members of the Disney
Mates, have held a chili sale and
barbecues in recent weeks for em-
ployees at the Main Street factory.
So far, the 10 -member team has
raised a little more than $3,000.
They're also hoping to receive a
$2,500 donation from E.D. Smith.
The company has contributed that -
amount to the team for the past two
years.
Last year, the team raised approxi-
mately $6,200 for the event, which
challenges participants to take
turns with their teammates walking
around the running track at Goder-
ich District Collegiate Institute for
12 straight hours.

monsen says. "A lot of us on the team
work straight midnights so that
helps."
Hill also says she has no prob-
lem staying awake for the all-night
event.
"You don't really think about it,"
she says. "The time just flies by be-
cause you're with your friends."
While teammates encourage each
other to have fun during the night,
the Relay for Life can also be an in-
tensely emotional - experience, Hill
says.
It begins at 7 p.m. with • the Sur-
vivor Victory Lap, when all those
who've won their fight with cancer
circle the track wearing matching
yellow t -shirts.
At 10 p.m., after the sun goes down,
the luminary ceremony begins. Doz-
ens of candles are - lit and placed in
small white bags, with each one rep-
resenting a team member's loved one
who has died from cancer.
"Seeing the luminary bags, that's
what really hits me," Hill says. "It's
very emotional."
