Playing the favourite game of their 19 -year-old
friend and relative Nick Van Dyk, who lost a bat-
tle to childhood cancer last summer, a sold -out
tournament of 160 ring toss players raised over
$15,000 recently towards research into a cure for
childhood cancers.
"(Nick's parents) Ken and Margie lived every
parent's nightmare. I'm sure we'd want everyone
to do anything they could to put an end to can-
cer," said Sharron Poole, who is cycling across
Canada in the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride.
Nick, who grew up in Woodstock, was celebrat-
ed at the event at the Van Dyk farm just out-
side Seaforth on Mill Road as family members
remembered his zest for life and his love of the
game his family played at annual get-togethers.
"Nick•was a great example of how to live a full
life," said his cousin and event organizer Tracy
Rossetti..
- She shared one of Nick's journal entries that
said he would gladly accept what was happening
to him during his fight with cancer if it would
benefit anyone else.
Rossetti thanked the Seaforth community for
its support of the fundraiser - along with the ring
toss players, funds were raised at the Seaforth
community garage sale when the Muir family, of

Egmondville raised $165 by selling hotdogs and
Ellen Jansen, of Seaforth, raised $144 by getting
sponsors as she cut her hair for Locks of Love.
Nick's cousin Leah Martins, of Hensall, also cut
her hair and donated it to Locks of Love in hon-
our of Nick.
Cousin Chad Van Dyk, of Seaforth, organized
the tournament structure for the 160 two -player
teams.
Chad said ring toss (or Texas Horseshoes) was
the perfect game to celebrate Nick because it's
easy to learn and very inclusive.
"I couldn't ever seem to beat Nick at sports but
he had a compassionate heart for everyone. He
had a positive outlook and a great sense of hu-
mour," said Chad.
Nick's family was presented with a certificate
from Rondeau Park, where a tree will be planted
in Nick's honour and with a $500 scholarship to
be presented at Nick's high school in Woodstock
in his honour.
Tracy said the ring toss tournament could be a
testament to all families to remind them of the
importance of playing together.
"The family that plays together, stays togeth-
er," she said. "And, everytime I see a ring toss
board, I'm going to be reminded to play."
