Sporting goods store promoting active family togetherness
Susan Hundertmrk
A Seaforth family is -turning their
love of fishing into Upper Canada
Sporting Goods, which opens this
week on Main Street.
Joe Dewartz, his wife Lisa Kehl-
Dewartz and their children T.J.,
Brandon and Kaitlyn are launching
a family business after Joe recently
lost his job with the closure of the
Volvo plant in Goderich. •
"I'm looking at it now as a bless-
ing in disguise," says Joe, who adds
that he and Lisa had always talked
about opening a sporting goods store
together someday.
While the store will be concen-
trating on fishing, hockey, golf and
baseball equipment, the couple says
the stock will include anything that
encourages families to get active to-
gether.
"We want to promote healthy living
and get families to do more together,"
says Lisa.
She says they'll also be selling
games like badminton, croquet and
tetherball sets.
Other products will include a good
selection of bicycles with a bike
repair shop
planned for the
basement and
skateboards.
The family
moved to Sea -
forth six years
ago from Cam-
bridge and did
not want to move
when Joe's job
ended in Goder-
ich.
"We love it
here. It's the
best place to
raise kids," says
Lisa. "We're

"We're an outdoor community," he
says, adding that while the store will
not carry hunting equipment, it will
carry some outdoor gear. -
Joe and Lisa say they chose the
name Upper Canada Sporting -Goods
to acknowledge the importance of
heritage on Seaforth's Main Street.
"Canada is hockey, sports and fish-
ing and Upper Canada looks back at
the country's heritage since we were
Upper Canada at one time," he says.
The two are excited to add another
store to Seaforth's downtown and
are planning to stay open past usual
shopping hours in Seaforth to create
some more traffic on Main Street.
Opening Monday to Wednesday
from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday and
Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Satur-
day from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and - Sun-
day from noon to 4 p.m., the sporting
goods store owners are hoping other
shopkeepers may follow suit.
"People are trying to promote shop
local but that's hard to do when
the stores, aren't staying open long
enough. We want to change that,"
says Joe.
The store opened May 9.
