The school's Green Club, under the supervision of Grade 7/8 teacher Karen Spillane, is preparing to start taking the organic waste out of the garbage stream. "We started with a garbage and recycling audit and we found we weren't doing as good a job as we could," says Spillane, adding that some unrecyclable• plastic was ending up in the blue box. - - And, with the greater awareness of which contain- ers and which type of plastic can be recycled has come a choice of fresher, more or- ganic snacks, she says. "We noticed a steady in- crease in fresher, perish- able things and that meant we needed access to get rid of the leftovers. The advan- tage is we're seeing better, healthier food choices," she says. While SPS has a green cone donated to the school when the municipality of Huron East also donated one to St. James School last year, the garbage audit showed the school that another green cone, along with a few com- posters would handle the waste. Spillane says since the green cones digest meat and bones, items that Wouldn't normally go into a compos - ter, they allow the school to divert more waste from the garbage. Containers have been or- dered for each classroom and Spillane says the students from Grade 4 to 8 are eager to get involved in the com- posting. "I think it's wonderful. It's great the way the kids are taking ownership of this," she says. "The students who ire so- cially aware are excited to get involved." • The compost created from the two composters will be used in the school's Peace Garden. The composters and green cones will also be used by the Avon Maitland District School Board offices to dis- pose of biodegradable plates and cups that are used for workshops and principals' meetings. Another new purchase will involve flatbacked recy- cling sorters to be placed at the end of the halls so that glass, plastic and paper can be properly sorted. • .?
