Ring toss tourney will raise money to fight childhood cancers
A 19 -year-old who loved playing
ring toss when his family got togeth-
er on the home farm near Seaforth
will be remembered with a Texas
Horseshoe (Ring ThssI tnitrnamPnt
which will raise money for a cure for
childhood cancer.
Nick Van Dyk, who grew up in
Woodstock and died July29 last
year, will be celebrated uring the
tournament at the Van Dyk farm at
42275 Mill Road on Saturday, June
6.
"We had a lot of family camp -outs
on the farm and ring toss was one of
Nick's favourite things there," says
his aunt and one of the organizers,
Marg Henderson.

friends will be
arriving from
Woodstock, Ex-
eter, Lucan,
Stratford and
Collingwood and
everyone is wel-
come to enter a
team in the tour-
nament to raise
money for a fam-
ily friend, Shar-
ron Poole who
will be cycling
across Canada
to raise money
to combat child-
hood cancers.

Kids Cancer
Ride as one of 36
cyclists selected to take part in a 12 -
day, '1,000 km ride from Vancouver
to Halifax. She must raise $25,000
to participate in the event and the
tournament's proceedc w ll go to
• wards her ride.
Nick, a cousin and nephew to many
in the Seaforth area, was in his first
year at Nipissing University in North
Bay with a career goal of becoming a
teacher someday.
"He was a pretty awesome guy - he
was never negative and loved all his
cousins to death. He was very well
loved," says Henderson.
She says that while Nick was forced
to quit university after his diagnosis,
he continued to volunteer at Wood -

teams to compete and each team of
two people will be charged $40 for
thrcc guaranteed games. `
Henderson said Texas Horseshoe,
sometimes called Holey Board, is a
fabvourite game of many in Huron
County. Built out wood and covered
in -indoor/outdoor carpeting, the
game has three holes into which
large metal washers are tossed for a
variety of points.
"Everybody in Huron County car-
ries these games in the trunk of their
car," says Henderson.
Donations will also be accepted
from those who don't wish to play.
