Cardwell said his experience in Huron County when murder suspect Jesse Imeson's whereabouts were unknown taught him something for the first time in his 28 -year career. "The thing I learned is that outside of police leadership, there is commu- nity leadership," he said. Vividly recalling the summer of 2007 when county residents were in a panic as Imeson remained on the lam following the shootingdeaths of the well-respected Mt. Carmel cou- ple, Cardwell was taken back by how Oke took hold of the situation. "It was a very tense time, obvious- ly, in South Huron," he said, noting he read a newspaper article in which Oke asked the community to remain calm and to have "faith" in police. "I've not forgotten that since I read it," said Cardwell. "It's important for a community to have a leader like yourself." Indeed, Cardwell noted he recently attended a conference in Niagara Falls, where he spoke of his experi- ence in Huron County. "I advised them politics does have a place in policing," he said, noting one of the Regiers' children also spoke to that group. In presenting a plaque of appre- ciation to Oke, who is the county warden for 2009, Cardwell again thanked him. "I would clearly, sincerely, like to thank you for the leadership." A visibly touched Oke recalled that the summer of 2007 was a difficult one both politically and personally, especially since there is no handbook on how to deal with such situations.
