Province hands out close
to $6 million to make local
schools more energy efficient
Schools in Huron and Perth Coun-
ties are among more than 1,000
publicly -funded schools across the
province will be made more energy
efficient with a two-year invest-
ment of $550 million by the provin-
cial government.
"This is wonderful news' for the
schools in Huron County," says
Carol Mitchell, Huron -Bruce MPP.
"Helping to refurbish our local
schools to make them more en-
ergy efficient and environmentally
friendly is part of the provincial
governments continued commit-
ment towards providing a cleaner
and greener Ontario for future gen-
erations," she says.
"A vibrant school environment
is a sustainable one," says John
Wilkinson, Perth -Wellington MPP.
"By retrofitting local schools we're
saving energy, saving money, and
teaching our kids about a greener
way to live. Plus, we are creating
local jobs at a time when our local
economy needs it most."
They say the two-year investment
will create and sustain more than
5,500 jobs.
Of the $550 -million investment,
$400 million will be, allocated to:
• Conduct energy audits to help
manage and conserve energy
• Retrofit buildings with new en-
ergy efficient heating, ventilation
and air conditioning systems and
boilers.

District School Board. •
• $1,594,705 for the Huron -Perth
Catholic District School . Board.
"Helping schools be more energy
efficient will have an impact be-
yond reducing, energy consumption
and saving money," says Jenny Ver-
steeg, chair of the Avon Maitland
District School Board. "The changes
to the buildings will clearly demon-
strate to our students and our com-
munities a practical way to lessen
our environmental foot print."
"On behalf of the Huron -Perth
Catholic District School Board I
am pleased to receive this capital
investment in our schools as it will
assist us in our calling to be Catho-
lic stewards of creation," says chair
Jim McDade. "This funding will be
used to . create environmentally -
friendly learning spaces, while re-
ducing energy use and greenhouse
gases in turn reducing ongoing
operational costs which will ben-
efit all members of the educational
community." •
The remaining $150 million will
be allocated on a project -by -project
basis to improve the learning en-
vironment for students currently
in energy inefficient portables and
schools.
The investment will save school
boards money by reducing energy
bills and will create jobs in Ontar-
io's new green economy. .
Ontario schools are also teaching
kids how to be more environmen-
tally friendly. Starting in the fall of
2009, environmental education will
be added to the curriculum in every
subject in every grade.
And, programs such as EcoSchools
are teaching students about con-
serving energy, minimizing waste
and greening school grounds.
"Making our school facilities more
energy efficient promotes better,
greener learning environments — a
key ingredient to building the best
possible publicly funded education
system in the world, and one that
inspires confidence in our commu-
nities and success in our students,"
says Kathleen Wynne, Minister of
Education.
This year, school boards will
spend about $460 million on utility
bills. The investment will help low-
er greenhouse gas emissions and
reduce annual energy consumption
by about 100 million megajoules per
year, enough to power over 2,500
houses.
