Reduced ER hours challenging local doctors
Reduced hours at • the Seaforth
emergency department are adding to
the challenges to staff physicians at
Seaforth Community Hospital, Dr.
Jason Datema told the Huron Perth
Healthcare Alliance in his site chief
report at its board meeting in Sea -
forth last week.
Datema said that while the Min-
istry of Health is continuing to offer
funding to staff the ER in Seaforth
with doctors since the emergency
department has been closing over-
night during the past three months,
the rate is pro -rated to the reduced
hours,- which makes the shifts -less
attractive.
"Whether you're there for 12 hours
or whether you're there for 24 hours,
it still takes a day away from your of-
fice. When you're getting paid for 12
hours instead of 24 hours, it almost
becomes more worthwhile to provide
an extra office day than to cover the
emergency department," he said.
Datema said some of the usual
locums aren't coming to help cover
the emergency department anymore
but added that summer months are
always harder to cover.
He said the arrival of Dr. Carmel
Schmitz, who has been a locum for
four months in Seaforth, has really
helped to fill gaps in physician staff-
ing at the hospital. But, since she's
not available in July, he said staffing
could be tough that, month.
"It will be something like what's
happening in St. Marys where we
have to pull out all the stops and
bear down and work extra hours to
do it," he said.
CEO Andrew Williams said the Al-
liance is entering the worst time of
the year for staffing in July and Au-
gust. -
•"Physician coverage is a real chal-
lenge right across the province," he
said, adding they're required to re-
port their staffing levels to the Local
Health Integration Network.
