The offer to purchase a vacant
$25,000 lot by Habitat for Humanity
Huron was accepted at Huron East
council's May 5 meeting._
Seaforth Colin. Joe Steffler said
that while the municipality is not
providing a lot for the Seaforth Hab-
itat for Humanity build in 2010, it
will be waiving the fees for water,
sewer and building permits..
The 20 by 39 metre lot is one of five
vacant lots owned by the; municipal-
ity on Sparling Street.
"Step one was getting the land
bought and now that we've . done
that, we can start advertising that
we're coming," said Habitat Huron
board member Glenn Hayter during
a -phone interview after the council
decision.
While the - Habitat Huron's atten-
tion is mostly focussed right now on
its build in Exeter, where the hole
was , just dug for the house, Hayter
said there is some action building
volunteer committees in Seaforth.
Huron East councillors Joe Stef
flee; who joined the Habitat board
and the site selection committee,
and Andrew Flowers have gotten
involved and Wendy Hutton, of Sea -
forth, joined the Habitat board and
the family selection committee. But,
Hayter said there are many more
volunteer positions to fill for the Sea -
forth build.
Hayter is hoping to be able to make
presentations to teachers at the local
elementary schools in Seaforth and
Brucefield where he's hoping appli-
cations can be sent home before the
end of the school year in June, en-
couraging low income families to ap-
ply to moveinto' the house.
As well, he said Habitat would be
happy to make presentations to lo-
cal churches, whose congregations
would also be a perfect source of
information about families most in.
need of low cost housing.
"If life were perfect, we'd have the
family picked by sometime this fall,"
he said, adding that Habitat Huron
will begin accepting applications im-
mediately.
He said it takes six months to
choose the family, which involves a
lengthy process of interviews and
credit checks. The family chosen to
live in a Habitat for Humanity house
partners with the organization and
must contribute 500 hours of "sweat
equity" towards the project.
"The earlier they get involved, the

"We are after the family who's most
in need of housing," he said.
Because Habitat Huron is buying
one of five vacant lots on Sparling
Street, Hayter said the potential ex-
ists to build more than one house in
Seaforth but added that would take
a lot more support from local trades-
people, fundraisers and volunteers.
"There are five lots the town of
Seaforth owns and they're all at the
right price. We could build more if
the town wants us to but it would be
a huge draw on volunteers and do-
