Fishing derby draws close to 170 participants
Dan Schwab
Dozens of kids proved on Satur-
day that you don't need to be a big
person to catch a big fish, during the
Seaforth Lions Club's annual fishing
derby.
Teens, toddlers, moms and dads
lined both sides of Silver Creek at Li-
ons Park to cast out their reels with
the hopes of bringing in the catch of
the day.
"We put it on for the kids, as a cour-
tesy to the community," said Lions
Club member Bob Beuttenmiller,
about the free event.
On Wednesday, the 250 trout were
transported from Hedley's Trout
Farm near Belgrave in fiberglass
tank on the back of- a truck and re-
leased into the creek.
"They should be hungry.. They
haven't been fed for a while," said
Paul Stephen, chair of the commit-
tee organizing the event. "Conditions
are pretty good today, but they don't
seem to be biting a lot."
But as the day went On, more and
more catches came in and were mea-
sured, vying for one of the trophies
offered for the top three biggest fish.
Michael Kelly brought in the big-
gest fish, measuring 36.5 centime-
tres.
Second place went to Brent Ingram,
whose fish measured 34.5 centime-
tres. Owen Hoelscher brought in the
third largest fish, measuring 34.25
centimetres.
Stephen said the biggest fish ever
caught during the derby was 27
inches. The trout they stocked in the
waters this year weren't quite that
big, averaging about 30 to 40 centi-
metres.
"But we usually hope to have some
naturals in there, which are some-
times bigger," he said. "It certainly
makes it more exciting for the kids."
The event ran from 7 a.m. till noon,
with 164 people attending.
Stephen says he's seen up to 300
people attend the event in the past,
but h,,prefers a smaller attendance.
"Three hundred kids is a lot of
hooks flying," he joked. "It's kind of
nice when it's a little smaller."
Stephen says each person was al-
lowed to catch two fish.
"They usually take them home and
cook them up or some of them will
end up in gardens as fertilizer," he
celebrate
