Students from seven Huron
County schools are learning three
simple swimming techniques that
could potentially save their lives
one day.
The. Vanastra Recreation : Cen-
tre is offering the Swim to Survive
program, pr ding more than 100
Grade 3 students with three one-
hour sessions in the ool.
Along with Seaforth blit School
and St. James School, other local
schools participating in the . pro=
gram include Huron Centennial
Public School and others from St.
Columban, Hullett, Hensall and
Clinton
The program began on April . 6
and will finish on June 25, with
each student earning a certificate
of completion.
Students will learn to master the
three swimming techniques from
the Vanastra Recreation Centre's
three instructors.
First, they'll be asked to perform
a somersault off the side of the pool
into the deep end.
It's meant to simulate the disori-
entation that would occur after fall-
ing unintentionally into water.
Then, they'll need to tread water
for one minute.
"It's to get their head above wa-
ter, so they can look around and
see which direction to swim toward
safety," says
Lissa Berard,
facility manager
at the Vanastra
Recreation Cen-
tre.
The students
will then need to
be able to swim
two lengths of
the Rec Centre
pool.
The ability to
swim this rela-
tively short dis-
tance may, how-
ever, be enough
to save a child
in an emergen-
cy, says swim-
