Track and field athletes warm up for upcoming
competition at University of Western event
Susan Ijundertmark
A recent invitational track and
field meet at the University of.West-
ern Ontario was a good warm-up for
the upcoming Huron Perth meet on
May 12 and • 13, agree coaches Cindy
Carter, of Central Huron Secondary
School and Baird Robinson, of St.
Anne's Secondary School.
Central Huron's track and field
team, which this year has a record
53 •athletes, had a number of good
results among the midget and juiiior
athletes.
"We have a way bigger team than
usual. Last year we had 35 and three
years ago when I first started coach-
ing, track, we only had 16 athletes.
They're doing really well and I'm
happy," says Carter, adding that the
majority of the team is made up of
Grades 9 and .10 students.
She says she hopes the large num-
bers indicate that the track and field
team is building at Central Huron.
"I just hope they stick it out and
want to stay involved. If you come
out, there's an event for you, even if
you're just working towards a per-
sona/ best," she says.
Seven Central Huron athletes fin-
ished in the top four at the Forest
City Invitational at .Western on Sat-
urday, April 25.
Luke Harrison, of Seaforth, came
third in the junior boys' 100 metre
run and fourth in the junior boys'
300 metre hurdles.
Brodie Cairns, of Seaforth, came
third in the junior boys' triple jump.
Adrienne Wise came first in midget
girls' triple jump and second in the
midget girls' 300m hurdles.

Dylan Lambert came fourth in the
midget boys' 300m hurdles.
Corey Pollard came fourth in the
junior girls' discus.

nior girls' pole vault.
Carter says she thinks at least half
of the 53 track and field athletes at
Central Huron this year have the po-
tential to get to WOSSAA this year,
which will be held at Western. And,
that's one of the reasons Central Hu-
ron participated in the Forest City
Invitational.
"It's such an overwhelming place
and the invitational gives the kids
a chance to familiarize themselves
with it," she says.
Luke a son, of antral Huron Secondary School leaps the hurdles, an event he
placed fourth In during the Forest 'City InVitatlonal track meet recently.

came first in the midget girls' 3,000
metre run and won the 1500m and
800m at the Lancer Invitational
Track and Field Meet in Lambton
Central last Tuesday.
"Shannon is a very good runner -
one of the top runners in the prov-
ince," says coach Robinson.
Robinson says the St. Anne's team
tends to be strong on the track with
its sprinters, hurdlers and long dis-
tance runners.
Ashley Janmaat and Sara Kram-
ers, both of Seaforth, were on the ju-
nior girls' relay team that won at the
Lambton meet.

With the Huron Perth meet being

have a bit of an advantage being able
to train at the school facilities.
"We work hard and we expect to do
well," he says.
