HBDC teaming up with county to welcome immigrants

The Huron Business Development
Corporation is teaming up with the
County of Huron and other organiza-
tions to bring newcomers to Canada
from other countries to offset the
huge number of retirements expected
to occur in the Huron County work-
force over the next half -decade.
In the next five years, there will
be 10,000 retirements in the Huron
County workforce, says HBDC man-
ager Paul Nichol.
"If every one of our school kids
stays in this county to work — and
less than 50 per cent will — that is
only 7,500," Niehol says. "We'll have
trouble keeping up with our popula-
tion and starting new businesses."
• The Huron Immigration Partner-
ship Plan is an attempt to bring more
entrepreneurs to the, county and keep
a viable workforce here.
The Ministry of Citizenship and
Immigration announced in March
that funding would be approved for
strategy development for the new
plan.
Nichol says although the dollar
amount is not yet finalized, it will
allow for access to funding to imple-
ment the plan.
He's hoping to bring together the
large partnership base already com-
mitted to the initiative to start meet-
ing and discussing details of the plan
in June.
Phase one will
have the HBDC
working with its
partners, from
local boards of
education to mu-
nicipalities to
•business organiza-
tions, such as the
Huron Federation
of Agriculture and
the Huron Tour-
ism Association,
Nichol says.

"We're hopingto come up with an The number ofnewcomers current -
action plan by March 2010," he says.
Nichol says a target has already
been set to attract 50 new families to
Huron County per year, with at least
10 of them entrepreneurs looking to
set up new businesses.
"The important thin is, we're not
. talking about people ing jobs from
people in Huron County," Nichol
says. "These are people with skills
and money to start new businesses."
ly coming to settle in Huron County
is about 50 per year, Nichol says.
Most are coming from Britain, Hol-
land, Germany and Switzerland and
many have successfully assimilated
into the local agricultural industry,
he says.
"Now we're looking at, can we bring
pharmacists or doctors or skilled
trades people in," Nichol says.
