Healthy Headwaters Wetland initiative ranti funding for residents to improve watershed wetlan Jordan Baker The Ausable Bayfield Conserva- tion _Authority is kicking into ac- tion its third year of the Healthy Headwaters Wetland Initiative, granting funding for individual projects that improve the water- shed's .wetlands. The wetlands in the ABCA's wa- tershed are only about two per cent of the . land coverage, explains An- gela Van Niekirk, watershed spe- cialist. - cialist. She points out the recommended number is greater than 10 per cent, leaving "room for improvement." Those numbers are what sparked the.: initiation of this program in 2007. Van Niekirk explains, The vv land program . started when the Ausable River Recovery Strategy noted there was a lack: ofwetlands in the watershed." Since- then the program has evolved into two parts: where wet- lands could go, used to exist, and to r#; match up the potential of wetland areas with landowners who are -in- terested in taking part. "From a societal point of view, there is more that can be done to protect wetlands and natural ar- eas," she says. "This year we are offering more technical as- sistance to landown- ers. in Huron County, and we are looking to restore six hectares [of wetlands]." Landowners in- terested in projects can receive funding through the ABCA, as a partnership with the Ontario Trillium Foundation remains through this year. Last year, the Min- istry of Natural Re - or excavating shallow areas to re- tain water, tree plan ting and fenc- ing projects to keep cattle out of watercourses, among others. Van Niekirk says, "Wetlands are nature's purification system, fil- tering chemicals, nutri- ents and sediments." The importance of wetlands being healthy is great, and the bene- fits are vast for all resi- dents. "Wetlands naturally balance our landscapes and provide water storage, which reduc- es flooding and slows down heavy surface flows, leading to .less soil erosion," she says. `There is more that can be done to protect wetlands and natural as,'— Watershed specialist Angela Van Niekirk sources and Ducks Un- ' . Anyone can participate in the wetland initiative, though the ABCA is looking for landowners with a minimum of two to : five acres. In the past, she says, land- owners have had wet 'areas of land, or flooding, soil erosion or livestock in the creeks. She adds headwater areas are key locations to restore wetlands, for groundwater discharge, and re- charge, and floodplains for holding water to reduce downstream: flood- ing. Van Niekirkiiotes there are some little things individuals can do. to improve wetlands in their area, like increasing vegetation in wet areas and and creeks with native plants, or attending an Environ- mental Farm Plan or Rural Stew- ardship Guide -workshop Contact, Angela Van Niekirk at the ABCA if you are :interested in learning more' or if you would like to share your knowledge of • local wetlands.
