CHP Leader says party has a commitment to
Cheryl Heath
taMERIMEIMO
Jim Hnatiuk believes the House of
Commons has room for the Christian
Heritage Party.
The Nova Scotia -based leader of
the party, which was formed in 1986,
is on a cross-country informational
tour, designed to promote how - the
CHP has a place in the Government
of Canada.
Though the CHP hasps yet to runa
candidate that wins a riding, Hna-
tick believes the time is nigh:
Pointing to the CHP's strong pro-
lift and anti -big government stance,
Hnatiuk says his party is different
than any other.
And more importantly, he says, the
CHP allows its candidates to open-
ly espouse their beliefs while other
mainstream parties shy away from
the practice.
We call ourselves the right conser-
vatives because the:Conservatives
Conservatives
are beginning to move left in order
to win a maj ority government," he
says.

Pressure to toe the party line is
another reason Hnatiuk believes in
the CHP. He points to government
subsidies for political parties that
meet set criteria as an example of,
an imbalance in the nation's political
structure.
"The difficulty is larger political
parties have political subsidies," he
says, noting parties must. capture 2
per cent of the popular vote while
fielding , 308 candidates in order to
qualify, which is a difficult feat for .,..
new and fledgling parties. • i``
"Where is the fairness?" asks Hna-
tiuk, suggesting the time has come
to do away with the subsidies.
Hnatiuk first became involved in
the CHP around 2000, when he found
himself becoming more interested in
politics and how government works.
A former naval -electronics tech-
nician, Hnatiuk, the father of two
adult children, grandfather of three,
and husband of 35 years to wife, El-
len, pondered creating his own faith -
based political party.
Then he came across the CHP ,.on
the Internet.
'ALITY of HURON
CLASS ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT
FOR EXPANSION TO THE SEAFORTH SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT
NOTICE OF STUDY COMPLETION
The Municipality of Huron East is planning to upgrade the Oak Street Sewage Pumping Station (SPS) and
expand the Seaforth Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to allow for continued growth and development
within the community and to address deficiencies, identified with existing operations. The plant's
hydraulic and organic capacity are currently beingexceeded and must be expanded to meet current
MOE criteria.
A preferred alternative for the project has now been selected which incorporates input received during
the Class EA consultation process. The existing treatment process utilized at the plant will be expanded
through the construction of additional treatment trains. The preferred alternative, which also includes
upgrades to the Oak Street Sewage Pumping Station and other components of the STP operations, will
provide sufficient capacity to meet the existing andfutureneeds of the community for a twenty five year
planning horizon. .p {

"The more I
looked and talked
to people, the more
wanted to know,"
he says.
$- Since then, T-Ina-
+iuk became an ac-
tive member and in
2008, was elected
as party leader.
That reality is
a furl -time job for
Hnatiuk who . has
been touring vari-
ous -_parts of the na-
tion in his quest to
boost -support for
the CHP.
"There are good
men and women
who want -to speak
their convictions
but they don't have
a party . to _back
them," he says. Jim Hnatiuk,l
He notes public
support for the CHP was overwhelm-
ing initially but the Reform Party,
which was created around the same
time, drew in many of those support-
ers3.
One of the CHP's ;pillars that he
truly appreciates it its commitment
to family, including a policy that
would see a stay-at-home parent re-
ceive $1,000 per month as a govern-
ment subsidy so both parents don't
have to work outside the home.
"The liberal view is 'we'll build day -
cares and take care of your children,"
he says. "We know that parents are
the best educators. We're also the
only pro-life party. Life starts at con-
ception."
These days, Hnatiuk is often asked
two questions: Why a Christian par-
ty and how can a Christian party
govern a secular nation?
a

Hnatiuk says it's important to un-
derstand the CHP does not seek to
convert Canadians.
"Canada was built on a Christian.
worldview," be says. "Most democ-
racies in the world are built on a
Christian's worldview. We- want to
maintain the foundation, chan6.f
everyone into Christians." '
As for present-day issues, Hnatiuk
notes the CHP would not . favour a
bailout of the auto industry, He says
low-interest loans could_ be one solu-
tion, but even that would be a hard
sell for his party. ' -
"If a company is going to fail, why
postpone the agony?" he asks.
Its speaking engagements includ-
ed a presentation at the Huron Bruce
Electoral District Association's an-
nual general meeting on April 23.
