Huron receives $300,000 in Communities inTransitionfunding
Members of Huron County Council
gathered on the steps of the Goderich
court house April_ 17, where Huron -
Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell doled out
$300,000 of Communities in Transi-
tion funds.
The funding comes from the Min-
istry of Economic Development and
Trade, and is intended to help com-
munities research, retrain and re-
bound from job loss.
Mitchell said the funds are intend-
ed for communities facing challenges
to explore new economic possibilities.
Especially, she added, communi-
ties where one large employer shuts
down like Can -Gro in Exeter, Wes -
cast in Wingham and Volvo in God-
erich.
"We're laying a foundation for the
future," said Mitchell. "A path going
forward."
Six projects were approved for Hu-
ron County, including Goderich Har-
bour, where part of the money will
be spent to do the pre -planning nec-
essary for new development in the
area.
"This allows us to do studies to ex-
pand and redevelop," said Goderich
Deputy -Mayor John Grace. "It's cru-
cial for the planning stages that we
start that immediately."
Both Huron County Warden Ken
Oke and Grace talked about the im-
portance of getting Goderich's ship-
ping capabilities expanded and the
boost it could offer the regional econ-
omy.
"The H2O highway is a huge com-
ponent," said Grace.
Oke said expanding the harbour
could greatly increase the possibili-
ties for commercial trade in Huron
- the effects of which could spill over
to the county's other industries.
In the south of the county, funding
was approved for the Centralia Col-
lege facility to build a business case
to develop an aeronautics and air-
craft refurbishing training facility
there.
That interest in aviation also came
through in the north, as the Richard
Laven Airport will also be examined
for possible other uses.
Again -in Goderich, funding will be
set aside for a property assessment
of the Volvo plant. The goal is to at-
tract reinvestment in the exisiting
facilities.
Rounding out the county's initia-
tives are marketing strategies, web-
site development and tiie develop-
ment of an Economic Development
Opportunities Blueprint to direct
future development.
Together with the county's
$138,000 leveraging, there is a total
of.$438,000 for the six projects com-
bined.
"This is go-
ing to do a lot of
good for Huron
County," said
Oke to Mitchell.
"We know you'll
be happy with
the results."
