While some teenagers just want to
be left alone, Sabrina Meidin.ger has.
earned some acclaim for doing the
opposite: speaking publicly about
life as an adolescent.
The 14 -year-old has just completed
a successful run in Royal Canadian
Legion speaking competitions, which
have earned her awards and cash
prizes.
Sabrina began writing down ideas
for her speech, "Life of a Teenager
According to the Alphabet," after
joining the speech writing club, at St.
James School.
She wrote out ideas, on scraps of
paper, then trimmed it down to a
few minutes in length to meet com-
petition -requirements.
She began to practice during recess
and had it memorized before the first
competition held at St. James School,
where she went up againsta number
of other members of the speech writ,-
ing
"1 practised but I didn't want to
overdo it," Sabrina says. "You have
to focus on being yourself" -
"One of the key things we talked
about was to memorize it right away,
then you can focus on the presenta-,
tion,"
adds her father Mike.
After winning the school competi-
tion, Sabrina advanced to the Zone
contest in Exeter in March. Her win-
ning performance there sent, her to
the district competition in Chats-
worth, Ont., where she received an -
.other first place award.
By this time, Sabrina, a natural-
ly outgoing eighth grader,.wasn't
nervous to speak in front of large
groups.
"I convinced myself not to be
vous;" she says.

groups.
"I wanted others to be able
to relate to it," she says. "So that
parents and siblings have some-
thing to say about it.
She also says while some o

it to be en-

she says.

On April 18, Sabrina, Mike andii
mom Shirley headed to the Ibrontox
Legion Branch 614 in Scarborough
for the area public speaking contest.
Sabrina faced the top two other
speakers in the region. -
"I didn't think rd make it that far,"
Sabrina says.
When she lit the stage, she had
perfected her speech, from speak-
ing at the right volume to, making
enough eye contact with the judges.
"People are always saying that they
are the best years of our lives and
that they are over before we know
it. So let's enjoy today," Sabrina an-
