Huron Expositor, 2009-04-29, Page 7News The Huron Expositor • April 29, 2009 Page 7 Huron East applying fth, tthirds funding for four infrastructure projects throughout the munici pality Susan Hunderimark Huron East is hoping to receive two-thirds funding from the federal and provincial governments for four projects under two infrastructure stimulus grants. Council agreed at its April 21 meeting to ap- ply to the Build Canada Fund for the Seaforth Sewage Plant Expan- sion project and to the Infrastructure Stimu- lus Fund for three proj- ects - a $3 million Va- nastra infrastructure replacement project, a $750,000 Jamestown Bridge project and a $600,000 Burgess Street project. Clerk -Administrator Jack McLachlan told council that with less than two weeks to meet an April 30 deadline, he, Deputy -Clerk Brad Knight and Public Works Co- ordinator Barry Mills sat down and looked at current projects that could qualify for the available funding. "This is our recommendation but it's council's decision which way to go," he said. Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan suggestedthat a new recreation fa-. cility for Vanastra would be a good project to submit for funding. "At some point, we said we were going to do something and we can get two-thirds of it paid for, that's the biggest boost we're ever going to get for it," said MacLellan. Tuckersmith Coun. Les Falconer said the Vanastra Rec Centre board- recently discussed its wishes for the current facility and decided that a $2.5 mil- lion project could put up the pool and fitness facility they wanted. "We decided if we were going to build a building in Vanastra it would be just a fitness building - there would be no daycare part of it or no hall part of it because there's other halls in the communi- ty," he said. However, Falconer added that he thought. asking for $3 million for new infra- structure for Vanastra would be a wiser choice .because "you're not go- ing to do two of them in Vanastra." "If you did two projects in Vanas- tra, that would be a better bang for your buck," responded MacLellan. "When the municipality is benefit- ting, the more money we can get out of the feds and the province." McKillop Coun. "A third of it is a lot cheaper than 100 per cent," said MacLellan. MacLellan said he's been bringing up the idea of a new recreation facil- ity in Vanastra for four years but the issue never comes back to the council table. "I understand we're tightwads and we don't want to spend money but at some point, we have to," he said. Knight told council that without drawings and firm numbers on proj- ects, it's hard to apply for funding and meet the deadline. We don't have things sitting on the shelf nice and easy," he said, adding that the projects that have been recommended by staff ire the closest to "shovel ready." McLachlan added that staff didn't recommend any recreation projects yet since another grant program is coming up specifically for recreation but the criteria hasn't yet been re- ceived by administration. "Our decision was to help alleviate our budget and this should help the cause. We think that's a fair good ap- plication," he said.
