SEVERE WIND STORM.
Following in the wake of the tornado
that passed ,over parts of the Vatted
UStates, in which nine persons were
killed between seventy-five and ane
hundred injured, and hundreds of thou-
sands of dollars of pnaperty destroyed,
a heavy wind struck this district just
short time before nine o'clock an
Saturday morning, coming from the
east, and while it was• not apparently
severe, it carried with it more power
than appeared on the surface. Be-
sides doing some..slight damage in the
Township of Uslbornr it took about
12 feet square off the roof of 'Mr,
Thos. Brock's barn on, the 9th con-
cession, and almost unroofed Mr. Dan.
Coward's .house: roof on the same con.
On reaching Exeter it raised the whole
iron roofing on the Central Hotel,
owned by lir. W. T. Acheson and car-
ried it into. his back yard. Owing to
the continued wind and rains all day
Saturday nothing whatever could be
done in the way of repairing the roof,
and as a consequence much damage
was done to the interior of the build-
ing by the intermitteart rajas.. The loss
to Air, Acheson will be .several hundred
dollars. Workmen have been engaged
putting on a new roof this week. One
young lady on. Huron Street while
coming up town was btlown completely
off her feat and thrown to the ground,
but luckily she escaped injury.
Miss Oluae Taylor spent the week-
end in London.

DECISION RE. NEWSPAPERS.
Any person who takes a paper reg-
ularly from the post office, whether
addressed in his name or anothers, or
whether he has subscribed or not, is
responsible for payment„
If a person orders his paper discon-
tinued he must pay all arrears, or the
publisher inay continue to send it until
payuient is made and then collect the
whale amount whether the paper is
taken or not.
The courts have decided that refus-
ing to take newspapers or periodicals
from the post office, or removing them
and leaving them unpaid, is prima facie
evidence of intention of fraud.
