New miniature Huron Counter library card design
gives 'usersthe option to clip it onto a keychain
Huron County Library users now
have the option of carrying their li-
brary cards on their key chains or in
their wallets.
The new library card design is based
on the new Huron County brand.
The various components of the
brand represent the lakeside
scenery, agricultural heritage,
strong sense of community and
relaxed lifestyle of the county.
The new Huron County Li-
brary card will be available for
free to all new library users.
Current library cards may be
exchanged for a new card or key
fobs free of charge until May
18,
After that, a '$2 replacement
fee will be required. Huron
County Library book bags may
be handed out with `the new li-
brary cards while supplies last.
Huron County Library cards
are valid at any of the 12 branch-
es of the Huron County Library sys-
tem.

Hair salons help promote
breast cancer awareness
When women go to their hair salon in April, they may wind up talking to
their stylist about an important topic: preventing breast cancer.
Public health units in Southwestern Ontario are work-
ing together with select hair salons on a project called
"Be a Breast Friend" to raise awareness about the im-
portance of breast health. .
"Salons are places where women have time to talk and
socialize with their stylist," says Karen Bergin -Payette,
Public Health Nurse with the Huron County Health
Unit. "Clients trust and listen to their stylists."
During the month of April at participating salons, styl-
ists will be handing out "Be a Breast Friend" information
packages to interested clients.
Stylists will also be encouraging women age 50 and
older to call the Ontario Breast Screening Program to
book a mammogram.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer
in women in Ontario. For women age 50 and older, the
risk of breast cancer increases.
Finding breast cancer early improves treatment op-
tions and survival rates. A mammogram is a breast x-
ray that can find changes in the breast even when the
changes are too small to feel.
Unfortunately many women fail to have regular mam-
mograms.
What Every Woman Should Know
• Be aware of how your breasts normally look and feel.
Talk to a doctor or nurse practitioner about any chang-
es.
• Ask a doctor or ; nurse practitioner to examine your
breasts every one to two years. •
• If you are between the ages 40 and 49, discuss whether
you need a mammogram with a doctor or nurse practi-
tioner.
• Women age 50 and older should have a mammogram
at least every two years. Women can book their own ap-
pointment by calling the Ontario Breast Screening Pro-
gram at 1-800-461-0640. No doctor's referral needed and
there is no cost.
• Reduce your risk of breast cancer: be a healthy weight,
eat well, be active, limit alcohol, live smoke-free and be
screened.
