People, not `stuff,' are what life's about, says speaker

"If there was a movie of your life,
my question is: would you be proud
of what you see?" he asked. "I'm not
concerned with what your answer is
about yesterday. I'm concerned about
your answer tomorrow."
Clemons urged students to avoid
the pitfalls of focusing life pursuits
on the accumulation of stuff.
"We've learned how to make a liv-
ing but not how to live," he said.
"We've conquered outer space but
not our inner space. We're learned to
rush but not to wait. There are more
computers and less communication.
Understand that life is not about
stuff. It's about people, man."
Being kind to one's fellow man,
said Clemons, is the key.
"We derive our significance in life
by how much stuff we have. How
popular we are. How much status
we have," he said. "Life is not about
stuff."
In noting the most severe form of
punishment in western society is sol-
itary confinement, Clemons said the
old song rings true: People who need
people are the luckiest people of all.
"If you stay by yourself long enough,
you go crazy," said Clemons. "Wheth-
er you want to acknowledge it or not,
we need each. other. That is what life
