Soccer and hockey star Carmen Carnochan
Conestoga College's female athlete of the
'-Dan Schwab
Carmen Carnochan was caught
by surprise during an athletics ban-
quet for Conestoga College April 6.
The 20 -year-old didn't know she
was being honoured with the presti-
gious award for the 2008-09 female
athlete of the year.
"I was shocked," the soccer and
hockey star says. "There were a lot
of girls who could've won. I wasn't
expecting it."
Carnochan, who recently complet-
ed her • second and final year of law
and police studies at the college,
grew up playing minor hockey and
soccer in Seaforth.
Her experience impressed coaches
enough to make her the captain of
both the indoor and outdoor soccer
teams.
On the outdoor team, she netted
three goals and set up four others.
While the team missed the playoffs
by only one goal, the indoor soccer
team fared much better.
Carnochan, as striker, led the
team to victories against Fanshawe,
Georgian, Durham and Seneca Col-
leges, winning the regional champi-
onship .
In the provincial tournament, Car-
nochan scored five goals and helped
Conestoga win the Ontario Colleges
Athletic Association bronze medal.
She was recognized for her efforts
on the field by being named MVP of
the indoor soccer team for the sec-
ond year in a row.
As a player on Conestoga's extra-
mural hockey team, Carnochan also
wore the 'C' on her jersey.
As a centre, she led the team in
scoring in every tournament, in-
cluding the last tournament played
at Conestoga, when the team was
named OCAA champions.
As athlete of the year, Carnochan's
name was printed on a plaque
mounted on a large trophy, which
will be displayed at the college.
She also won a dedication scholar-
ship with a cash award.
Now that she's graduated her
college program, Carnochan says
she'll continue her athletic career
by joining over -21 soccer teams in
St. Columban and Stratford this
summer.
She also plans to continue her
post -secondary education in the
coming years.
Twenty -year-old Carmen Carnochan, frori Seaforth, stands with the awards she was
honoured with by Conestoga College April 8.

"The river was beautiful but cold
and a lot were in
it. I think it was
Easter joy that
put them in the
river," he says.
