The Huron EXpositor• April 8, 2009 Page 9 From Page 1 making a presentation on the prov7 ince's Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), also known as Bill 118, to interested mu- nicipal officials on April 17. "We want- to keep our profile as visible as possible," said Kelly in reference to the legislation. Indeed, she noted the committee will have a booth at the upcoming April 20 bro- chure swap for that purpose. Coun. Deb Shewfelt (Goderich) wondered whether there has been any discussion with regard to the Association of Municipalities of On.- tario (AMO) resolution requesting a delay in enforcement of the act given its broad scope. "There's a suggestion it's coming too fast," he said. He added the HCAAC was quite helpful with input on the recent God-: erich town -hall renovations. Larry Adams, ChiefAdministrative Officer for Huron County, reported there are a number of concerns in several quarters about the act's re- quirements. "It's coming awfully quickly it's 'ex- tremely expensive," he said. Coun. Neil Vincent (North Huron) said it is unfortunate the provincial legislation is lumping all municipali- ties into- one class since larger ones have the revenue to handle renova- tions. "In the economy we're in right now, things are going to have to be looked at," said Vincent, noting municipali- ties should enlist the help of Huron - Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell. Meanwhile, County Warden Ken Oke reported he recently attended a seminar where there proved to be two points of view on the legislation. One speaker said there would likely be no enforcement as long as a mu- nicipality has an action plan while David Onley, the Lieutenant. Gover- nor,who is entrusted with enforcing the act, said those found not to be in compliance will be prosecuted. "There are two different versions of it. It is going to be costly and it's going to be a lot of work to renovate some of these buildings and bring them up to code," said Oke. The HCAAC chairwoman said it is unlikely any municipality will hold itself up as a test case by refusing to comply with the act given the range of fines involved. The act states that persons or organizations convicted of an offence under its purview are liable for fines of up to $50,000 for each and every day or part day that an offence happens while a corpora- tion may face a fine of up to $100,000 for each and every day or part day that an offence happens. Directors and/or officers of a corpo- ration are also liable to fines of up to $50,000 for each and every day or part day that an offence happens.. . - • Tree Ttimming & Removal • Snow Removal • Plowing • Snowbloviing • Aerial Buckets • Brush Chipping • Stump Grinding & Removal • Lot Cleaning Free Estimate 24 Hour Plantar Fasciitis, Metatarsalgia, Heel Spurs, Bunions, and many more.
