Known as the "dynamic duo" for
their combined 75 years of volunteer
work on the Seaforth Community
Hospital Auxiliary, co -choirs Fran-
ces Teatero and Joan Chesney were
recently recognized with a 2009 On-
tario Volunteer Service award.
Teatero joined the local auxiliary
shortly after moving to Seaforth in
the 1960s. She had already bought a
hospital auxiliary membership in 'lb-
ronto after the birth of her firstborn
son at Queensway. General Hospital
and had a year's experience on the
hospital auxiliary in Almonte, near
Ottawa.
"I was a new mom in hospital for
four days and I was impressed by the
'women who brought in the gift cart
they were so friendly and they made
me feel good," she remembers.
After receiving a phone call from
Dorothy Hays asking her to join the
Seaforth hospital auxiliary 40 years
ago, Teatero became one of the young-
est members atthe time, to be joined
a few years later by Chesney and the
two quickly becam.e good friends.
- Chesney worked as. a nurse at the
hospital a the same tiiie she joined
the auxiliary 35 years -ago.
While the hospital auxiliary main-
ly concentrates on raising money to
buy equipment for the hospital these
days, the two remember taking on
. various other jobs when they first
began.
For instance, Chesney remembers
a time when the auxiliary members
spent their Sunday 'afternoons sew-
k'brig bandages for one of the local doc-
tors to use during surgery.
"When the awdliary first formed, it -
was all about patient care. I remem-
ber hearing how the older ladies used
to sew. sheets for the hospital beds,
along with pajamas and bandages,"
says Teatero.

"And, they made preserves for the
kitchen," adds Chesney.
"The older ladies were so wonder-
ful and gracious," says Teatero, nam-
ing Dorothy Hays, Alice McConnell,
Alice Reid and Dinah Sills as women
who made them feel welcome on the
auxiliary
The hospital :auxiliary also used
to be responsible for pushing a cart
with Woks and treats from zoom to
.room, a service that hasn't been done
for the past 20 years. • '
As well, it used to run the "candy
stripers" or student volunteer .pro-
gram at the hospital, a service now
offered through the liuron Perth
Healthcare Alliance management.
Teatero and Chesney still .take the
time to visit patients.
"We want to let them know we care
about.them,” says Teatero.
Teatero's involvement with the
Seaforth auxiliary eventually led her
to get involved in the Hospital Aux-
iliary Association of Ontario ,(HAA0)
and its district executive, serving as
district president and director of vol-
unteer services for all of Ontario for
23 years.
"I love working with the kids," she
says, adding that she's seen hun-
dreds of Seaforth students volunteer-
ing
at the hospital, many of whom
went on to careers in healthcare.
Chesney will be taking on a similar
challenge in the coming year as she
becomes second vice of District 2 of
the HAAO, a three to five-year com-
mitment as she works her way up
to district chair.
Because she's
retired from
nursing, she
