First Healthcare Inspiration t awards draw 43 nominations

Lauded for her compassion, caring
and sunny disposition in nine sepa-
rate nominations, Jenna Becker, of
Dashwood, who works as a personal
Support worker at Saint Elizabeth
Health Care, received the top award
in the new Healthcare Inspiration
Awards heldlast week in Seaforth.
"When Jenna cared for my elderly
mother while she was in a nursing
home, she laiways made my mom's
day brighter," said one nomination.
"She never says no to anyone in
need of a helping hand. She truly lis-
tens to people and acts according to
their needs," said another nomina-
.

The 23 -year-old, who has worked
for four years as a personal support
worker, says she has 11 years' expe-
rience in healthcare, beginning at
age 13 volunteering at the Bluewa-
ter Rest Home.
"I really like working with seniors.
I want to help them with the remain-
der of their lives and putting a smile
on their faces is what I aim for," she

Becker was one of 43 Huron and
Perth RNs, RP148, PSWs and other
healthcare workers nominated for
-the new awards, begun this year by
the Huron County Healthcare Pro-
viders' Group and Healthkick Huron
to promote the retention and recruit-
ment of nurses by expressing ap-
preciation for the nurses and other
healthcare workers in the area:
In the primary care catekory, win-
ners included Sue Leddy, of (leder-
,. ich, an RN who works at the Mait-

land Valley Medical Centre and Joan
Ritsma, of Gadshill, the manager of
the STAR FHT in Stratford.

the category of primary careRPN

was excited by the number of 'nomi-
nations received when the awards
night was planned only a m�nth
ago. . .
"We want to boost morale and make
the general pubiic Aware there's:a
huge shortage of nurses but that it's
a very. valued profession to be in,"
she said.
She added -that the idea to thank
nurses for the 'job they do with
awards was welcomed by the local
hospitals and longterm admin -
Schalk said that while everyone
works hard and deserves recogni-
tion, it was wonderful to .hear the
stories of how nurses and healthcare
workers are touching the lives of
their patients.
"Nurses are fairly humble souls
and don't think they deserve the rec-
ognition - they don't think what they
do is spectacular but it is," she said.
Everyone nominated received cer-
tificates of merit from either Huron -
Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell or Perth -
Wellington MPP John Wilkinson
while the award winners received
gold lockets. The overall winner re-
ceived a diamond bracelet.
Nominees from Huron County in-
cluded Esther Gervais, Diane Wood,
Lynn Davies, Helen Henderson and.
Joanne Hickey, all of Seaforth, Mar -
