Accessibility laws raise concern

Sweeping new provincial legislation de-
signed to enforce stringent new standards
for a fully accessible Ontario is beginning
to draw raised eyebrows from county
councilors.
In reporting on the Huron County Ac-
cessibility Advisory Committee's latest
meeting to county council April 1, chair-
woman Dorothy Kelly (Morris-Turnber-
ry)said concern is mounting about the
legislation, set to take effect in the year
2011, because of the potential pricetags
attached to it.
"Don't leave it all to the last m4nnte,l"
she suggested, noting lower -tier munici-
palities with concerns about upgrades to
Andrew Carnegie library branches and
other heritage buildings may soon want
to start a letter -writing campaign....
Kelly said one positive aspect of the
HCAAC is it does have the necessary
experts on board to 'advise municipali-
ties and businesses 'on their renovation
plans.
Kelly pointed to Huron East as an ex-
ample of a municipality that recently uti-
lized the service for its Brussels arena -
renovation plans.

the LAC at a meeting last Mon-
day.
"When you compare wait times
for cardiac beds, there's going
to be a longer wait time in the
larger centres where they offer a
more complex array of care," he
said.
The London Free Press article
compared wait times at emer-
gency departments for patients
with complex conditions last No-
vember.
Seaforth Community Hospi-
tal's wait time was the lowest
with a 2.9 hour wait while Clin-
ton Public Hospital's was the
second lowest with 3.1 hours.
The two other Alliance hos-
pitals showed wait times of 6.7
hours at St. Marys and 7.7 hours
at Stratford hospital while Lon-
don hospitals showed a 14.6
hour wait at Victoria Hospital
and a 24.4 hour wait at Univer-
sity Hospital.
LAC chair Gord Rimmer, who
brought the newspaper clip-
ping to the meeting, said he
still wanted to celebrate the low
times shown in the article and
wanted to post the information
on the wall in Seaforth's emer-
gency room.
"Sometimes you have to make
people feel good about where
they live," added LAC member
Frances Teatero.
