Bantam broomball team wins silver medal
The Palmerston Co-ed Broomball
tournament was held on March 6,7
8.
Seaforth bantams had two games
on Friday night. The first game was
at 6:40 p.m. against the Mildmay
Bullets. Mildmay had a strong first
period but the defence and goalten-
ding of Adriana Herrera kept the
score..at 0. The second period Sea -
forth showed more offence but nei-
ther team could score.
The game was to be decided in
overtime and it didn't take long.
Mildmay won the face-off and took
a shot from outside the blue line as
Bridgit O'Reilly tried to block but
the ball sailed into the net about 5
seconds into overtime.
The second game of the round -rob-
in was at 9:20 p.m. Palmerston was
the team Seaforth had to beat to
have a chance of advancing to the
semi-finals. The game didn't start
out good for Seaforth as Palmerston
within 10 seconds came right in on
net and scored. After that wake-up
call Seaforth didn't panic and got
back into the game. About halfway
through the first period Seaforth
was pressuring and then Ryan Van
Miltenburg from in close was able to
get one by the Palmerston netmind-
er.
Both teams continued their even
play until late in the first period
when on defence Bridgit O'Reilly
was pinching in and scored on a
wrist shot close in on net.
The second ,period stayed scoreless
with the defence on both teams not
taking any chances. Seaforth was
trying hard to keep the lead late in
the game when with only 3 minutes
left Palmerston was able to get one
by Herrera.
With the game tied this one would
have to be decided in overtime. It was
a very good and tense overtime pe-
riod. Both teams had good chances.
O'Reilly stopped several in her end
including at least two breakaways.
Late in the overtime defencemen
Austin McClure broke through cen-
ter ice and was alone against their
defence. Following in on the rush was
Renee Robinson who just returned to
the team after being out for the sea-
son with a broken ankle. McClures'
shot was stopped by the defencemen

Seaforth's Kim Alcock of the Mitchell Stingers, fights for the ring with two
Exeter players March 20. Exeter won the game 6-4, which featured three giris
from Seaforth on the Mitchell squad: Melanie Nolan, Ashley Lavis and Alcock.
Danielle Primeau, also of Seaforth, played for Exeter which won the silver
medal, losing 5-4 in the final to Chatham March 22.
Radars' season ends in OT
It was like deja vu all over again.
Game 7... Radars trailing by 3 in
the third... they come alive to tie the
game in its dying minutes and send it
to overtime. Except this game seven
didn't have the same storybook end-
ing for the Radars that game 7 of the
first round had. It ended with shock,
disbelief, and elimination from the
playoffs by the Tavistock Royals.
Just 53 seconds into overtime, ref-
eree Larry Murphy assessed Radars
goalie Sean Ellison a very strange
hooking penalty, halting a Ra-
dars two -on -one rush. The Radars
couldn't kill the penalty, and exactly
two minutes into overtime, the puck
found the back of the Radars' net and
their season was over.
Goal scorers for the Radars in the
5-4 loss included Zack O'Krafka, Cole
Stewart, Matt Anderson and Mark
VanDooren.
Radars leading playoff scorer and
fan -favourite Luke Vick saw little
action in game 7. Game 6's hero
suffered a split finger before com-
ing back to score Sunday's tying and
winning goals.

but Robinson picked up the rebound
and scored. What. a- great end to . a
great game.
Seaforth advanced to the semi-final
where they played against the
Mildmay Jets on Sunday morning
at 10:00 a.m. This was another close
game but Herrera was determined
not to let them on the scoreboard.
The winning goal for Seaforth was
scored by Scott Parsons. Parsons
was in position at the side of the net
when the ball rolled over his way
and he made no mistake in
getting it over the line. Later on Van
Miltenburg scored his second of the
tournament for the insurance goal.
In the championship game Seaforth
played Blyth at 2:00 p.m. This game
was like all the rest in the bantam
division - very close.
Defence and goaltending were
exceptionally strong in this game
and it would end up 0-0 after regu-
lar time. In overtime Blyth had one
close chance when one of their play-
ers took a shot,it hit both posts and
came out again. The Blyth bench
emptied as they thought it went in.
Alex Klaver took a penalty on the
play so now Seaforth had to play 2
minutes 3 against 4 players. The
penalty killers did their job as Blyth
couldn't score on the power play.
A short time later they were able
to finally find a spot past O'Reilly to
win the championship. Seaforth was
awarded the silver.
At the awards banquet on March
11 on the Seaforth bantam team
Bridgit O'Reilly won the Most Valu-
able Player. Sabrina Meidinger won
the Most Sportsmanlike Player and
Claire Allen won the Most Improved
Player.
