More residents seeking
assistance from Ontario Works
Cheryl Heath

The number of Ontario Works recipients is.
on the rise in Huron County. •
In presenting a report to Huron County's
committee of the whole, March 17, Social Ser-
vices director Dave Overboe says the number
of people on assistance is on the rise.
A review of the numbers inspired Council-
lor Bernie MacLellan (Huron East) to ques-
tion how tough times are in the region.
Overboe says while the county continues
to fare well in comparison to other regions,
there is still concern about the situation.
"Huron County is a good place to live be-
cause we don't feel a recession as strongly,"
he says, noting there are more informal safe-
ty nets in place, like family members that
are willing to lend a hand.
Indeed, he says, though recessions have
generally not hit Huron County as hard as
other regions in Ontario, the bad news is the
county is slower to rebound.
"Generally speaking, there's always farm-
ing required," he says.
According to stats included in a report, there
were 493 residents on Ontario Works assis-
tance at the end of February 2009, while the
number sat at 357 cases in February 2008.
Council not in favour of supporting
bottled water ban in facilities

Huron East council voted not to support a
ban on the sale of bottled water at municipal
facilities during its meeting March 17.
The resolution urging all municipalities to
phase out the sale and purchase of bottled
water at their own facility and for munici-
pality's came from the Federation of Cana-
dian Municipalities.
The resolution also asked that municipali-
ties develop awareness campaigns about the
positive benefits and quality of municipal
water supplies.
The resolution was put forward.by the cit-
ies of Toronto and London over mounting
concerns for "environmental impacts related
to the production of bottled water, the energy
requirements for the production and trans-
port of bottled water, as well as the disposal
and recycling of water bottles."
The resolution noted that between 40 and
80 per cent of water bottles end up in local
landfills, creating a burden on the environ-
ment and municipal taxpayers.
It also pointed out that it takes about three
litres of water to manufacture a one -litre
plastic bottle of water.
"Bottled water is not as good as munici-
pal water in terms of safety," said Brussels
Coun. David Blaney, noting that tap water is
highly regulated.
But McKillop Coun. Bill Siemon spoke
against the resolution, calling it "just a feel -
good thing."
"They don't controll what you use for con-
tainers you put the water in. The bottle is
recyclable. Because you only recycle 20 per
cent, it's not the fault of the municipality,"
he said. "When London turned around and
they banned bottled water, then they said to
the golf courses you can't have bottled water
but if you put fountains in, they've got to run
continuously. What's that going to do for the
sewers?"
While four councillors voted for the motion
to support the resolution, it was defeated by
council.
