Timber'soutfltters opens on Main Street With a name like Dwain Forrest, it seems like a perfect match. On March 5, the Seaforth native opened- Timber's Outfitters— a "one stop shop" for campers, kayakers and hikers who have a passion for trailing through the bush. Forrest, a mechanic by trade and truck driver for the past five years, felt he needed to do something different with his life and decided to turn his hobby into a business. For the past 20 years, Forrest has ca- noed and hiked all across the province, from the interior of Algonquin Park to northern Ontario to local trails and waterways in Huron County. Inside Timber's Outfitters, beginner and experienced campers will find ev- erything from tents and sleeping bags to life jackets and rucksacks. Smaller items and equipment can be also be found there that might even save a camper's life in an emergency situation. The shelves are stocked with bear bells, hatchets and thermal emergency blankets. Another item for campers is a compact towel that comes in a 2x2 inch small case. After applying a. few drops of water to it, the towel expands to 22x12 inches. It's the type of gear that will come in handy for a kayaker or canoeist, whether- they're on the waters of -Al- gonquin Park or closer to home at the Hullett Marsh .or the Falls Reserve Conservation Area in Benmiller. "We have lots of local spots that we Dwain orrest Timber's Outfitters have to start promoting," Forrest says, naming Shelter Valley Campground in Clinton and Family Paradise Camp- ground in Walton as just a couple of the many hiking and canoeing spots around Huron County. "It's something you can do if you're young or old," Forrest adds. "When times are tough like they are now, it's entertainment everybody can do without putting $1,000 worth of gas in the boat or something expensive like that." Timber's Outfitters has several sizes of canoes and kayaks for sale, manu- factured by Clearwater Design of Pickton, Ont., with each coming with a five-year warranty. Forrest says about 80 per cent of the his inventory comes from Ontario, from compasses to utility knives to cooking gear. He also makes his own canoe paddles in his Seaforth garage. He starts by cutting the piece of wood into a plank, milling it to shape and staining it. He uses a variety of different wood, from cedar and spruce to cherry and white ash. The beaver tail and voyager style canoe paddles can even be customized with a personalized logo. "If a customer wants their name or an image like a butterfly or a moose on the paddle, we can carve it in or burn it into the paddle," Forrest says. The entire process takes about five hours to complete. It's a hobby Forrest has worked at for the past .few years. He's says he is hoping that people will share his passion for the outdoors once the weather warms up and more families will consider taking camping trips. "I want to attract people by making camping a family sport," he says.
