around 20,000 years to win.)

Exeter-Hensail pipeline planned
over the last couple of years and re-
cently going on line, Johnston won-
dered why there was no anticipa-
tion of problems bringing that new
pipeline into a 60 -year-old system.
Burns said replacing a watermain
is in part driven by break history.
"We don't want to change wa-
termains just because they are
old. There were no breaks in 2006
or 2007, but now we're seeing the
breakdown of the system." -
There was, some concern among
councillors over the cost to replace
the watermain.
CAO Lori Wolfe said there is more
than $400,000 in the reserve- fund
and can cover the replacement, but
Johnston said the cost could jump
into the millions if problems con-
tinue with other parts of the system
that are 60 years old as well. About
2,000 metres of pipe are part of the
original system.
Mayor Bill Dowson said being con-
cerned about replacing water pipes
in the whole -town is "fear of the un-
known."
He said they simply don't know if
cussion
the other pipes will need replacing
and can't_ speculate on what work
may be done in the future.
The. last repair was done on Feb. •
5 and the cost per repair, Burns
said, is anywhere from $6,000-- to
$10,000.
Colin... George. Irvin wondered if
perhaps the problems are behind.
them. He said, as most of the prob-
lems seem to be the joints, maybe,
nowsome have been repaired, the
watermain will be fine.
. Watermains nowadays are ex-
pected to last 70 to 80 years so the •
60 -year-old pipes may be ready to
go, and the replacement should be
•a long-term investment. -
Coun. Jim Fergusson asked Burns -
if repairs can be made before there •
is a break in the. pipe. .
Burni told council they can't re-
ally "pre-empt" a repair since it
usually just consists of capping the
problem.
Burns. said in part these breaks
are a cold -weather problem.
