OMAFRA promotes
local Good Food
Box program
The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural
Affairs and the Huron County Health Unit are spreading
the word about the Huron -Perth Farm to Table's Good
Food. Box program.
In a presentation to county council March 4, replete
with goodie bags including locally grown rutabagas,
OMAFRA representative Jane Muegge and unit spokes-
woman Janis Dunbar outlined the perks of the program,
which is delivered monthly to 11 locales.
The idea behind the program, said Muegge, is multi -
pronged. One aspect is to provide county residents with a
nutritious array of locally grown produce at a reasonable
price, the second is to support local farmers and the third
is to educate consumers about the types of foods grown
here.
"We have some customers who like to buy it because it's
like Christmas every month," noted Dunbar.
There are still some myths floating around the Good
Food Box program, said Muegge, citing the inaccurate
perception that it's a subsidized program as one exam-
ple.
Muegge said program subscribers pay $15 per month
on the first Thursday of each month and pick up their
box, replete with educational brochures including reci-
pes, on the third Thursday. She noted a new marketing
brochure, highlighting the benefits of the program, is be-
ing rolled out.
Dunbar reported the program enjoys a great deal
of community support with some places, including St
Anne's Catholic Secondary School in Clinton, ordering
more than a dozen boxes every month.
"Lead by example, encourage your municipalities to
participate," enthused Dunbar.
Muegge added that Moore's Foodland in Clinton sup-
plies the program with specialty items, like oranges and
bananas and out -of -season produce, when the need aris-
es at cost.
In all, 2,500 boxes were sold in 2008, contributing
$30,000 to the local economy. The program is volun-
teer driven and accumulated 1,300 volunteer hours last
year.
