ER will still receive ambulance's,. Alliance -CEO says.

Seaforth Hospital's emergency de-
partment will not be turned into an
urgent care centre if the Huron Perth
Healthcare Alliance has anything to
say about it.
At their March 5 meeting, HPHA
CEO Andrew Williams reassured
board members that although the
idea was brought forward at a recent
HPHA Medical Advisory Committee
(MAC) meeting, the HPHA remains
firm in its stance that despite the
recent changes to their hours of op-
eration, the Seaforth ER should con-
tinue to receive ambulances.
In fact, the MAC passed a motion
supporting maintaining the Seaforth
Community Hospital as an Emer-
gency Department at their meeting
Feb. 26.
"We talked about this because if
you had a chance to read any of the
reports across the province, there's
a push that if a department is less
than 24 hours, it shouldn't be receiv-
ing ambulances and it should be an
urgent care centre and we don't sup-
port that at all," Williams explained.
"We think that in rural communi-
ties where the same professionals are
supporting the department, that the
hours of operation should not impact
whether ambulances are received
and its designation," he said..
Chief of Staff, Dr. Laurel Moore
explained the difference between
urgent care and emergency depart-
ments citing St. Joseph's hospital in
London, which is now being run as
an urgent care department, as an ex-
ample.
"The idea is that they're going to
manage fractures and lacerations
but if you're critically ill and would
need the services of an ambulance
then you should be going to an emer-
gency room," she said. "The walking
wounded can go to an urgent care
centre."
However, Moore pointed out that
because many people are not aware
of the designation, urgent care cen-
tres can wind up treating emergency
patients.
"What they're finding is that some
people are arriving in extremis in
their own car...because they don't re-
aljze the difference between urgent
care and emergency centre. So they
arrive sometimes with a massive
heart attack and they're managed
there. They don't ship them out, they
manage them there and stabilize and
so on. So our feeling is that if you
have to keep that skill set up for. the
odd case that happens, you should be
doing it all the time. It doesn't make
sense," she said.
"Ambulances would not go there,"
Moore added. "We think that's crazy,
if Seaforth emergency room is open .'
and they've got a competent physician
and nurse in there, then we should
be accepting an ambulance because
it's a long distance to go maybe for
the next stop."
Seaforth hospital administrator
Mary Cardinal said that so far, the
transition in Seaforth to fewer hours
is going smoothly.
"To date things seem to be going
well. The extensive communication
strategy has proven effective. We
continue recruitment efforts for the
emergency dept. We've had success
for our in-patient unit for our recruit-
ment of registered nurses but noth-
ing to date for our emergency depart-
ment," she said.
Cardinal added that activity at the
Seaforth ER and the impact on adja-
cent sites will continue to be moni-
tored.
