Arena plans to be engineered for grant readiness
Susan, Hundertniark
Planned improvements to the are-
nas in Seaforth and Brussels will
be engineered to prepare for federal
funding in a new Recreational Infra-
structure Canada program.
"I'm right ready to make a motion
to get the engineering done and get
these things shovel ready. Let's get
something on the board so when Ben
Lobb come along with a big cheque,
we step up to the plate and say we
want it," said Seaforth Coun. Joe
: ^f Stef ler, adding that Huron East
will be competing with muncipali-
ties throughout Huron County who
have arenas the same age as Huron
East's.
Huron East received a letter from
Huron -Bruce MPP Ben Lobb at its
March 3 meeting informing the mu-
nicipality about $500 million set
aside to provide 50 per cent to build
or renew recreation centres.
While it was initial) discussed
to include the Vanastra Recreation
Centre in the motion, councillors
agreed that engineering for Vanas-
tra is premature since it's not cer-
tain yet exactly what the community
wants.
Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan said both arenas . are
ready with drawings of plans for
new washrooms and dressing rooms
but a decision. hasn't been made yet
about whether a new building or an
addition is necessary in Vanastra.
Brussels Coun. Frank Stretton
said he wanted to see more consul-
tation with the arena boards before
council spends money on engineer-
ing.
Steffler said passing .the motion
will signal to the arena . boards that
council is supporting them to go
ahead with their plans to improve
their facilities.
"I'm getting heartburn up here be-
cause you guys didn't say how much
you want to spend. Engineering
doesn't come cheap," said Mayor Joe
Seili. •
McKillop Coun. Bill Siemon de-
bated that places like Vanastra need
more help with infrastructure fund-
ing than they do with recreation fa-
cilities.
"I'm more concerned with decent
infrastructure. You've got to have
dry basements, you've got to have
sanitary sewers and you've got to
have water. Infrastructure should
first of all be infrastructure, not rec-
reation centres,":he said.
Steffler responded that the govern-
ment is giving money for recreation,
not for new streets.

Londesboro and Dungannon.
The Bogies' walk from Seaforth
to Dublin was their third walk and
they hope to walk from Clinton to
Seaforth on April 13. They've also
completed walks between Auburn
and Blyth and Wingham and Tees -
water.
"We like to walk and this is our pet
project," said Mel.
"We're very active people," said
Dorothy. "We're not ones to sit on the
couch and watch hours of TV."
While the Bogies had originally
planned to begin their walking cam-
paign in the fall, Dorothy fell ill in
the fall and Mel had a fall off a lad-
der that required surgery.
But, they didn't let those obstacles

"We're fortunate we've got our eye-
sight and legs to walk with so we can
help the ones that can't hear, see or
walk," said Dorothy. "Besides, this is
helping us feel better - helping oth-
ers is a great healer."
While it took; them close to two
hours to walk to Dublin from Sea-
forth,
ea.forth, the Bogies expect that a few
of their walks will take about five
hours each.
"As near as I know, every club is
supporting us - they don't have to
but I sure hope they will," said Mel.
With over 100 dogs a year coming
out of the Canine Vision program,
the Bogies are hoping the money they
raise can go towards. various: types
of equipment needed to care for the
dogs, including medical equipment
such as X-ray machines and dental
scalers along with heated flooring for
the kennels.
The Bogies will be presenting a
cheque with the total of what they
raise to the District A9 Convention
in Sauble Beach on May 9 and 10.

Seili said the municipality needs
to be prepared for everything.
"You've got to have projects for rec-
reation, projects for roads and proj-
ects for projects. You have to have
a list there so when they give you
those 30 days to come up with a proj-
ect, it could be anything. You have to
have a library of stuff ready to go;"
he said.
Tuckersmith Coun. Larry McGrath
said he didn't want the municipality
to sign a blank cheque for engineer-
ing.
"There should be some limits put
on it. We are in a crap shot here and
I don't want to see $50,000 of en-
gineering sitting on the shelf," he
said.
Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan said the municipality
will need to spend money on engi-
neering to beready for provincial
and federal funding.
