Huron East EDO not discouraged about store closures
From Page 1
we haven't even seen the tip of the
iceberg - it's going to get a lot worse,"
says Fry.
Fry says that while he's always
had a challenge convincing people to
buy the higher quality meat he's sold
over the past 15 years, he's even hav-
ing trouble getting business on the
catering side of Tucker's.
"The catering's really slowing
down - people don't have the money
to throw away," he says. •
Huron East economic development
officer Jan Hawley said that while
she's heard rumours, she didn't
know the two Seaforth businesses
were closing. .
"I'm saddened. to hear about Nifty
Korners and Tucker's - they were
unique, they had great products and
they added a lot of character to the
downtown," says Hawley.
However, Hawley says that while
she's heard that some shops are hav-
ing difficulties, other stores "did very
well over Christmas."
"It is unrealistic to thinle•Huron
East would get away unscathed in
the recession," she says, adding that
Seaforth is doing fairly well in com-
parison with downtowns like Goder-
ich.
"But, I'm not going to get discour-
aged because I'm still getting enqui-
ries about new businesses wanting
to come to town," she says.
"Huron East is very serious about
economic development. Very few mu-
nicipalities in Huron County have a
fulltime economic development offi-
cer who can respond quickly to en-
quiries. It's a sign
of confidence that
we're open for
business," she
says.

Huron East donates 1980 pumper
Huron East council is hop-
ing a donation of the Seaforth
Fire Department's 1980 Ford
Pumper to the Emergency
Services Training Centre in
Blyth will result in comp er^'i-
z it towards training.
"If any of our fire depart-
ments want to use the train-
ing centre is there is a cost?
Can we get a written letter
of credit towards whenever
we're going to use the centre?
If nothing else, the truck was
certainly worth something
as scrap metal. It was worth
something to the municipal-
ity," said Deputy -Mayor Ber-
nie MacLellan.
A recommendation to donate
4h3 Gld truck to the ESTC in
Blyth was made from Sea-
forth's District Chief Tom
Philips at council's Feb. 17
meeting.
McKillop Coun. Bill Siemon
asked if the truck could be sold
to a northern Ontario munici-
pality, as the Blyth Fire De-
partment did in the past when
Siemon was a member.
Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan said the truck is
likely only worth $1,000 to
$1,500 since it is run on gas
not diesel.
"If it was a diesel, it'd be
worth $18,000," added McKil-
lop Coun. Andrew Flowers.
Mayor Joe Seili added that
before the training centre was
located in Blyth, the munici-
pality paid mileage to send
firefighters to Gravenhurst
for training.
one call a week from businesses in-
terested in locating in Huron East.
"A number of things are out there
percolating. For Huron East, I'm
feeling pretty darned good about
things," she says, adding that she's
not at liberty to discuss what new
businesses could be coming to town.
