The St. Anne's Secondary School
swim team continued its remarkable
season Feb. 17 at the WOSSAA meet
in London by earning a plaque for
first place overall girls and finishing
in second overall among all teams.
Swimmers who came first in their
event during the meet will automati-
cally advance to OFSAA, which will
be held March 3-4 at the Olympian
Pool in Etobicoke.
The team's most spectacular per-
formance of the meet might've been
the junior girls' 200 -metre freerelay
race, when the squad smashed the
old WOSSAA record by almost 10
seconds.
Swimmers Nicole Van Gaalen,
Marvel Muller, Kristin Devereaux
and Nadine Otten finished the race
with a time of 2:10.42, to earn the
new WOSSAA record.
Correena Otten set a new WOSSAA
record in the senior girls' 100 -metre
backstroke, shaving almost four sec-
onds off the old record with a time of
1:14.81.
Other first place finishes includ-
ed Nadine Otten in the junior girls
50 -metre freestyle and Kristine De -

vereaux in the junior girls' 50 -metre
breaststroke.
Devereaux, Nadine Otten and the
junior girls' free relay squad were
all seeded number one going into
the meet, but coach Terrie Van Osch
says it was a real surprise to see the
senior girls' team win two relays.
Swimmers Julia Bakker, Ellen Mc-
Manus, Jenna Maaskant and Jes-
sica Sparling took first in the senior
girls' 200 -metre medley. In the se-
nior girls' 200 -metre freestyle relay,
Sparling, McManus, Maaskant and
Correena Otten won first with a time
of 2:10.42.
"I knew they had a chance at a
medal but two were really sick with
a cold so I didn't expect them to get a
faster time and win," Van Osch says.
"It was very exciting." -
Nicole Van Gaalen came in . second
place in the junior girls' 50 -metre
breaststroke and fifth in the junior
girls' 50 -metre freestyle, but earned
an OFSAA qualifying time in both
races.
Open girls' medley relay team mem-
bers Correena and Nadine Otten,
Dani Heinbuch and Kristin Gaalen
finished in third place in their race,
but also earned an OFSAA qualify-
ing time. •

Jenna Maaskant finished third in
the senior girls' 50 -metre butterfly,
but finished with an OFSAA qualify-
ing time.
There is a possibility that two other
swimmers, Dani Heinbuch and Kris-
tin Van Gaalen, will also advance to
OFSAA for the open girls' medley re-
lay.
Swimmers who didn't finish in first
place but made an OFSAA set time
standard, will have to wait about a
week until the list of the top swim-
mers is posted on the OFSAA web-
site.
Only 32 entries will be allowed in
each event.
.Other successful finishes at the
WOSSAA meet in London include
a second place finish by the junior
boys' medley relay team, with swim-
mers Eric Dwyer, Avery Podgorenko,
Erik Gagne and Paul Van Osch fin-
ishing with a time of 2:32.08.
The open boys' medley relay team,
comprised of swimmers Dwyer, Rob-
ert Norsworthy, Nick Vaessen and
Derick Murray, also finished in sec-
ond place with a time of 2:19.52.
The team of Dwyer, Van - Osch,
Podgorenko and Dylan Bruxer, fin-
ished in third place in the junior
boys' 200 -metre freestyle relay.

Three midget basketball players from Sea -
forth playing on the Central Huron Secondary
School team, are expected to a have a bright fu-
ture in the sport, says the team's coach Shane
Taylor.
Paul Doig, Keegan Melady and Riley Ward,
all in Grade 9, have all played with determi-
nation this season, helping to .lead- the squad
through another successful year.
Point guards Doig and Melady both had
strong games, earning them points last week
when the team faced Exeter, winning 45-27,
and later losing to St. Michael Catholic Sec-
ondary School in Stratford, 41-28.
Ward, who stands over six feet tall, was also
effective at his low post position, earning six
points.
Coach Taylor
says while Doig
and Melady are
skilled dribblers,
Ward uses his
height to score
on rebounds.
"They should
become great
athletes," Taylor
says. "They're
all academic stu-
dents with a good
future in playing
sports."
sworthy, Murray
and Matt Nigh
also finished in
third place in the
open boys' 400 -
metre freestyle
relay.
"We really
have to thank our boys' relay teams
for helping us to get second overall,"
Van Osch says. "They really stepped
up and swam their hearts out to take
two silvers and two bronze medals."
Heinbuch also took home a silver
medal in the open girls' 50 -metre
freestyle event.
The team of Kristin Bakelaar, Kris-
tin Devereaux, Nicole_ Van Gaalen
and Marnel Muller took fourth place
in the junior girls' medley relay
race.
"To say I was proud of our swim-
mers is an understatement," Van
Osch says. "It has really been about
the team all year and not how each
individual can shine."
Central Huron Secondary School
sent four swimmers to the WOSSAA
meet: Amy Bicknell, Nikki Steep,
Kody Jacobs and Lexi Cook.
Cook, a Seaforth native in Grade 9,
made waves in the pool this season
as a first-year swimmer.
Swim coach Scott Middleton says
he "fully expects Cook to make it to
OFSAA next year."
Middleton also says Seaforth swim-
mer Kody Jacobs, in Grade 11, still
has two years to develop with the
team before graduation.
"I think he's going to own those
events in the next two years," Mid-
dleton says.
At WOSSAA, Jacobs finished third
in the senior boys' 100 -metre back
crawl, with a time of 1:16.
Coach Julie Hohner says she's
proud of the team and is looking for-
ward to next year.
