Luiirks staff tries to prevent flooding
Susaq Hundertmark
While he didn't make any guar-
antees that he'd be able to pre-
vent any flooding in the north
end of Seaforth over the predicted
weekend thaw, Huron East Public
Works manager Barry Mills told
homeowners he had some short-
term and long-term plans.
"This weekend may be plus 10
(degrees Celcius). The drain is
open today and ready to go. But,
we do have the whole municipal-
ity to look after and we will be
looking at other sensitive areas,"
he said at Huron East's Feb. 3
council meeting.
Council has been hearing from
residents of north Main Street,
Briarhill and Hickory Street about
recent difficulties with flooding,
caused when access to the Law-
rence Drain is blocked by snow
and ice.
Mills said public works staff
have been told to keep the drain
inlets and culverts clear of snow
especially when the weather could
cause flooding. He also said the
culverts have been marked to try
and prevent snowmobilers from
packing down the snow. 'r
"These are interim measures un-
til we can create a berm to contain
the overland flow longer," he said,
adding that he has talked to the
Middegaal family, who own the
land to the north of the affected
area asking if they'd be willing to
allow a berm to be built on their
property.
"They're in favour of looking at
that a little further. They're re-
ceptive if they're kept informed
so they know what impact it has
on them. But, that solution won't
happen overnight," he said.
Mills added he's also having a
riser to increase the height of the
grate to allow wa-
ter to enter be-
low the surface
blockage, simi-
lar to a hicken-
bottom.
