Boston's Beanpot tourney

While a few bad bounces ended up
causing a 5-2 loss for Northeast-
ern University in the champion-
ship game of Boston's recent 57th
Beanpot tournament to determine
the best university hockey team in
Boston, Seaforth's Mike McLaugh-
lin scored one of the two goals for
Northeastern.
"It was a great game. We were
sitting right behind the net so it
was pretty exciting," says his dad
Gerry, who travelled to Boston last
week for the game.
"He seems to play better when
somebody he knows is watching,"
says Gerry, adding that he and
other family members have been
travelling down to the U.S. fairly
frequently as spectators.
The first two Monday nights of
February in Boston are reserved
for the Beanpot, an annual hockey
tournament that. features Boston
College, Boston University, Har-
vard and Northeastern.
"It all started on Dec. 26, 1952 at
the old Boston Arena. The next year
the Beanpot moved to the Garden,
where it has been played ever since
and become the official battle for
Boston's hockey bragging rights,"
says the tournament's website.
In his freshman year as a North-
eastern Husky, McLaughlin so far
has earned four goals -and two as-
sists in 15 games and .there, are
still six games to go until the finals
this season.
"He's doing fine on the ice," •says
Gerry, adding that Mike is also get-
ting As and B -pluses in the class-
room and has earned a spot on the
dean's list.
"The team is full of seniors so it's
tough to get ice time. You've got to
fight for it and the practices can be
just as tough as the games if you
want to get a spot on the ice during
a game," he says.
Gerry says of Mike's play so far
that he's set up a game -winning
goal, he's scored a game winning
goal and got the first goal in the
Beanpot championship game.
"So, all of his goals have been im-
portant goals," he says.
