.Local manufacturers are "extreme-
lyconcerned" about a U.S. provision
that would .require an public works
projects. to use only American-made
steel, iron and manufactured goods,
the president of the Huron Manufac-
turer's Association said>last week.
The "Buy American" provision of
an economic stimulus bill, currently -
being discussed by, the U.S. Senate
and the House of :Representatives,
would negatively affect manufac-
carers of all sizes_ in _Huron County,
Chris Meier. says ., r 3 "`=` `F:
• Nearly all local manufacturers are
exporting a large amount of their
production south of the border, with --;i
some -companies, such as Progressive
Turf equipment Inc. in . Seafor'th,
sending 80 per cent of its products. to
the U.S.
• "I can't believe they would put that'
.,c4-) , out there in the --media and not thk
there'd be a backlash," Meier .says.
"I'n surprised they ° would invole
Canada. It's = disheartening•"

steel labor unions continuing to pres-
sure Congress to include the "Buy
American" provision in the $789 bil-
lion economic sti,aulus plan.
Even if the provision is taken off
the table, Meier says some Canadian
manufacturers are fearing the media
exposure about "Buy American" has
been enough for the U.S.to encour-
age purchasing from local companies
for public works projects.
"If it doesn't go. _through, there
will be residue left behind," he says.
"They might be asking themselves,
`Weren't. we always buying Ameri-
can?"
He says there is concern that
:American brands will in the future
=tbe sought out for jobs, instead ofpur-R
chasing being done based on price`
alone. , .
"They'll buy American because they
have relatives relying on those jobs"
Meier says.
He adds that there will be po way
of telling if American goods will :be.
pteferred over Canadian ones.
-:114eier says thatwhile many local
manufacturers are currently build -

ing their inventories and not sell-
ing as much, there is still hope for
a better economic landscape in the
future.

ter of "Buy American" looming.
The Canada -U.S. trading relation-
ship is the biggest in the world -an
Meier expects that only the•.nation

tated by the provision.
