Tuesday Tunes is back for another year
Weekly musical collective begins season with a tribute to fiddler John Zettel
Dan Schwab
For the past nine years, one lo-
cal event has given musicians,
singers and fans of old-tyme fiddle
music a bright and lively option to
the dreary winter doldrums.
Tuesday Tunes is happening
every. week at 1 p.m. until April
21, .inviting new and experienced
musicians to participate in a two -
and -a -half hour jam session at the
Seaforth Community Centres.
Dancers and spectators are also
welcome, says organizer Tom
Melady of Dublin, who adds that
the event was supposed to debut
this season on Jan. 13 but was
cancelled due to snowy weather.
Melady, who taught himself to
play guitar at age 12 and has been
plucking away for decades since,
proudly. refers to Tuesday Tunes

and spectators have
attended from as far
as Waterford, Strath-
roy and Listowel.
He says that as the
sessions went on last
year, the crowds in at-
tendance swelled to up
to 280.
Melady says musi-
cians are especially
grateful to have the
space and facilities to
perform.
"The difficulty for
them is they don't
have a venue to ex-
press their music and
this provides that to them," he
says. "When they first come, some

Melady says every
year the event do-
nates about $2,000
to the food bank.
He says last week 26
musicians showed up
to perform country
and old-tyme fiddle
music.
Melady says the
music ses$ions some-
times have 15-20 mu-
sicians playing at once, with one
performer featured on the micro-
phone.
He says the performance opened
last week with a tribute to John
Zettel of Staffa, who died three
ter.
"We miss him at Tuesday Tunes,"
Melady says. "He was right there
with us from the start. He was a
keen supporter of it and a fine fid-
dler."
In 2005, Melady, Zettel and his
wife June produced a 29 -song CD
titled Tuesday Tunes LIVE!
Twenty-nine musicians appeared
on the CD.
June still volunteers at .F the
weekly event.
