"We didn't have a problem on Main Street until the: subdivision went in and now the subdivision is having problems. All we're asking is for you to fix the problem," said Ray Eden. Ray and Beverley Eden along with Anne and Lyle Furry, all of Main Street North, appeared at council's Jan. 6 meeting to complain about water running into their garages and basements during a recent thaw when the drainage ditch to Law- rence drain was plugged with snow and ice. Huron East Public Works Coordi- nator Barry Mills said he felt that while the capacity of the drain is "huge," the problem revolves around the fact that the drain was blocked with snow and ice. He added, however, that the cir- cumstances, which included the melting of 18 inches of snow and a steady rainfall all weekend, caused flooding conditions throughout the municipality. ,.Ylt,..,K ":7_.* r "A ' lot of drains wouldn't have worked anyway because the ditches were full. When you have that much snow, that much rain and that much melt, that's a triple problem," added od1n iri Mayor Joe Seili, who added that mu- nicipal staff can clean out the drain once just to have it plug up again. "How big do you want us to build it (the drain) because everyone's pay- ing for it," he said. Mills said the . municipality can't monitor the drainage ditch daily -but he can place it on a priority list to check when a thaw is expected, add- ing that he hoped . the nearby hom- eowners would also check on it. "There is a co -ownership of the drain," he said. Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan asked if a solution :could be found that wouldn't : Woo .people to eon= stantly checklif drainage ditch is open1- eafort Mills responded that after check- ing with the municipality's engineer, no other solution was presented but constant maintenance. McKillop Coun. Bill Siemon asked if a larger cage could be put around. the drain to prevent snowmobilers from packing down the snow over it. Mills said the municipality would put more markers around the drtin but that they would have to be moved when the ditch is cleaned out. Eden askedif it wouldn't make sense to clean-out the drainage ditch whenever town staff dug out the snow from the fire hydrants in the. area.
