Hospital foundation asked to
raise $40,000 to recruit nurses

The Seaforth Community Hospital
Foundation has been asked to take part in
a $1 million recruitment effort for nurses
by the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance.
Alliance CEO Andrew Williams made
a presentation to the Seaforth- hospital
foundation last Tuesday, asking the foun-
dation to consider contributing $40,000
over the next five years.
Seaforth's foundation was the last to
receive the presentation. The $1 million
plea includes a request of $4Q,000 from
foundations at both Clinton Public Hospi-
tal and St. Marys Memorial Hospital and
a request of $80,000 from Stratford Gen -
"It would be nice to have a commitment
by the end of the fiscal year in the next
three months. It would initially be focused
on nurses but it could shift based on need,"
Williams told members of the Seaforth
foundation.
Williams' presentation, which he called
a "strategic imperative," said Canada was
graduating more nurses in 1972 than it
did in 2002, there are two nurses over the
age of 50 for every nurse under 35 in Can-
ada and the Canadian Nurses Association
is predicting a shortage of 113,000 nurses
by 2016.
"It's getting worse. The workforce is ag-
ing and we're seeing more extended sick
leaves," said Williams.

After "limping along" for sever-
al years with a nursing shortage
at Seaforth Community Hospi-
tal, administration announced
last week that the emergency
department would have to close
for 12 hours each . day starting
Feb. 7.
"The nurses . have been phe-
nomenal, really patching things
together for the past two and a
half years - they've forgone va-
cations and worked triple over-
time. But, we've gotten to the
point where we don't have an
adequate number of nurses with
ER qualifications," said SCH site
administrator Mary Cardinal.
Cardinal stressed that the
nighttime closure of Seaforth's
emergency department from
8 p.m. to 8 a.m: is an interim
situation driven by the nursing
shortage, not by finances or phy-
sicians.
"It's regrettable but it is the
most responsible • decision," she
said.
Dr. Jason Datema, chief of staff
at SCH, said the decision should
not come as a surprise to com-
munity leaders.
"We warned them months ago
there was a problem with nurs-
ing: Last week, it became a crisis
and there wasn't opportunity for
broader consultation," he said,
responding to concerns by Hu-
ron East council that it hadn't
been consulted through a local
healthcare partners committee
before the decision was made.
Cardinal said the sign on .the
front lawn of Seaforth's hospital
advertising the need for nurses

tively recruiting nurses during a
