Two bridges in Huron East have
been rehabilitated with $94,000 re-
ceived through the federal gas tax.
The bridges, located on Hensall
Road and Front Road, were official-
ly opened Jan. 13 by Huron -Bruce
MP Ben Lobb during a visit with
Huron East council.
"It's so hard for the government
to know what the bridge needs of
communities are at any one time,"
Lobb said before presenting the
cheque to Mayor Joe Seili. "This
puts the money into the hands of
communities. The goal is to pro-
vide predictable, stable funding."
The first allocation of the fund-
ing was received in 2005, with the
condition that it was required to be
spent within a three-year window.
The Hensall Road bridge, located
north of Tile Road in Tucker -
smith, has a current replace-
ment value of $375,000. The
repairs that took place in
2008 include patch repairs
to the concrete deck, water-
proofing, paving and the in-
stallation of guiderail exten-
sions and end abutments to
absorb , the impact of traffic
collisions.
The Front Road bridge
north of Vanastra in Tucker -
smith has a current replace-
ment value of $632,500.
Built in 1956, recent repairs
included similar work done
to the Hensall Road bridge.
"The (funding) has given
us a chance to allow future -
forward planning," Seili said.
"Knowing what money is
coming for infrastructure al-
lows you to
plan and
budget
better for
these proj-
ects."
The two
projects were
completed in
November with
a total . cost . of
$139,000, with
the municipal-
ity covering the
remainder of
the costs after
the $94,000 re-
ceived in federal
funding.

Huron -Bruce MP Ben Lobb presents a plaque to Huron East Mayor In recognition of
the .municipality's 2008 bridge deck re ablutatlon proijects
bridges, ranging from $173,570
to $215,139, with the job being
awarded to Lavis Contracting; who
submitted the lowest tender.
In June, 2005, Huron East coun-
cil authorized all federal funding
received under the federal gas tax
fund to a bridge reserve for the
replacement or rehabilitation of
bridges and culverts. -
"Our asset management plan has
determined the replacement value
of our 113 bridges and culverts to
be over $25 million and the federal
gas tax fund assists our municipal-
ity with implementing a program
of rehabilitation and renewal of
these structures," Seili said.
In the 2008 federal budget, the
government announced the gas tax
fund will be permanent at $2 bil-
lion a year beyond 2014.
From 2005-2014, Huron East will.
have received $2,245,527 in federal
gas tax funding.
With each bridge in the munici-
pality assuming a lifespan of Ti
years, an annual - depreciation of
$330,000 could be used, said Huron
East deputy -clerk Brad Knight.
The municipality's bridge study
has identified work. on 35 struc-
tures over the next five years to be
worth more than $2.9 million.
Some
planned projects
still pending
council approval
include a bridge
- on Division Line
in McKillop,
which has an
estimated cost
of $119,000; an-
other Summer-
hill Road with
the same esti-
mated cost and
a second bridge
on Summerhill
Road with an es-
timated cost of
$212,000.
