OPP warn of
scam artists
Huron OPP were notified
of a scam that occurred this
month . in Huron East but
could occur anywhere.
The victim of the scam re-
ported that he was selling an
article on Ki,jiji for $200.
He received an email from
a woman who said that she
wanted to buy the item for her
husband. She, however, asked
that he accept a money order
for $2,500, take $200 out for
the item purchased and then
wire $2,300 to a third party
in Paris, France. The Huron
East man agreed.
He received a money order
from the CIBC and he stated
it looked authentic. He took
the money order to his bank,
cashed it and then wired the
$2300 to an address in Paris,
France.
People are reminded to be
on alert for these types of
scams. As soon as a poten-
tial buyersends more money
than was agreed upon, and
requests some action in . ex-
change, the deal should be off.
Scam artists can make .their
documents appear to be quite
authentic but in this day and
age, people need to be a bit
more suspicious.

Huron County council is expected
to make a decision at their next meet-
ing Feb. 4, regarding a committee rec-
ommendation to provide $500,000 in

Council heard presentations .Jan. 9
from representatives from Gateway,
including president Lin Steflier. -
"Projects are sttarting and as they
come in, administrative fees can be
charged to cover operational costs.
Eventually, Gateway will be able to
financially sustain itself, but to make
that a reality, we need your initial sup-
port."
Steffler said a county agreement to
fund Gateway will assist in the recruit-

Gateway scientific director Dr. Clau-
dio Munoz told council the next ad-
vancements in medicine will not come
so much from the introduction of ad-
vanced new technologies or complex
devices to treat the very sick, but will
come from research at the frontline -of
health care.
"(From) community doctors, nurses,
dieticians and pharmacists doing re-
search on the epidemics of obesity,
smoking, lack of exercise, early diagno-
sis," he said. "It is research on how to
prevent getting sick in the first place."
He added that'Gateway will offer lo-
cal investigators the opportunity to de-
velop partnerships with academic in-
vestigators to form teams dedicated to
areas of research such as heart disease
and stroke, diabetes, mental health,
cancer or the health status of .orphan
patients. ,

"We will, help obtain funding and
form appropriate partnerships with
experts at academic centres," he said.
"Involving the training of students will
open opportunities for local health pro-
fessionals."
Physician recruitment leader Gwen.
Devereaux said 250 jobs have been
generated in the healthcare field in the
area over the past five years.
"A very large attraction to this area
is (the) ability to do research at Gate-
way," she said. "I believe the economic
impact of Gateway will bring many
more healthcare professionals to this
county and it has already started.
The representatives from Gateway
also presented council with letters of
recommendation from the South West
Community Care Access Centre, the
