Homeowners at Main Street North in
Seaforth -are still having troubles with
flooding, ' despite a •$60,000 drain built
to solve the problem in 2005, Huron East
council heard at its Jan, 6 meeting.
Anne Kling -Furry, her husband Lyle and
Ray and Beverley Eden appeared before
council to complain about water running
into their garagcs and basements dur-
ing the recent thaw melting the massive
snowfall in December.
Kling -Furry said the main problem is a
drainage ditch leading to the new drain
plugged with ice and snow and a 10 -inch
catch basin behind their homes that was
never big enough to drain the area.
"We're very disappointed the town did
not keep their promise. The ditches were
to be kept clean. All it takes is a backhoe
to clean the ditches out when you know
there's going to be a thaw," she said. •
She said that despite the fact that a
snowmobile trail had been moved, snow-
mobilers are still travelling the ditch as
a route into town and are packing it tight
with snow.
"All the neighbo irs were out there with
shovels digging out the ditches at 1 a.m.
and at 7 a.m., the back yard was filling up
with water again," she said. •
Ray Eden said despite the fact that he
has five sump pumps, he still has a flood-
ing problem.
"The town spent mega bucks to put in
underground drainage which handles
it 75 per cent of the time and the town
promised to keep an eye on it. It would be
a lot easier to clean out the ditch prior -to
the flooding," he said.
He asked if it was the town's reeponsi-
bility, the county's or whether he needed
to hire someone with a backhoe to keep
the ditch clear.
"If the ditch is plugged, it goes into my
and Anne's basement. State Farm's al-
ready paid $150,000 for my basement
and I don't think they'll do it again," said
Eden.
Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffier said the new
drain has the capacity to drain "
