for visitors.
"We don't want anyone to be able to see it all in just
one day. We want to encourage people to stay," he
says.
As well, he's hoping the fall event will encourage
more volunteers to get involved in each community.
"We're hoping to have costumed interpreters telling
the ghost stories," says Sickinger.
Seaforth Coun. Bob Fisher, who represented Huron
East at the first meeting, says he thinks a weekend
event might draw more volunteers but wants to know
more about how the community feels before joining
the county project.
"We've had a good response over the past three
years in Huron East with daytrippers interested in
our history and we've had good luck in the summer-
time," he says.

Council refuses to support ban
on smoking in cars with kids
Susan Hundertmark
Because they couldn't see a way it could be
policed, Huron East councillors refused to
support a letter from the Ontario Medical
Association asking for its support for a
provincial ban on smoking in vehicles that
carry children.
"The idea behind it I support 100 per cent,"
said Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan at
council's Dec. 18 meeting.
"But, I'm concerned it will be a stepping
stone. Next will be banning smoking in your
home. Why not just be done with it and out-
law cigarettes. There will be grumpy people
for a while and then it will be over," he said.
Seaforth Coun. Joe Steffler asked how the
ban would be enforced.

McKillop Coun. Bill Siemon suggested
"smoke cops in cars."
Mayor Joe Seili pointed out that some peo-
ple still need to be told to stop smoking near
children.
"They may have to ban stupidity," added
Siemon.
Citing research that shows exposure to sec-
ondhand smoke in vehicles can be 23 times
more toxic than in a house because of restrict-
ed air circulation, the OMA is asking munici-
palities to call for a provincial ban.
"In the past municipalities have shown
strong leadership in banning smoking in
workplaces and public spaces. Your personal
support, and if feasible, a supportive resolu-
tion from your council would be of great help
in the matter," says the OMA letter.
