`Haunted Huron' proposed for 2008 Doors Open

A county -wide Doors Open pro-
gram using the theme "Haunted
Huron" is being proposed for 2008.
Rick Sickinger, coordinator of
Heritage and Culture Partnership,
an arm of Huron Tourism, says his
organization is offering to pay the
$1,500 fee to be featured in the
provincial Doors Open pamphlet for
any communities in Huron County
who want to participate.
"Goderich, Bayfield and Huron
East have been participating in -
Doors Open. But, we've been hear-
ing a lot of word on the street that
some communities think they're not
big enough to do it on their own,"
says Sickinger.
"We (Heritage and Culture
Partnership) have some extra cash
so we thought let's promote the
whole county," he says.
At a recent meeting of interested
municipalities, it was decided that
the weekend of Oct. 18 and 19, the
Doors Open program in Huron
County would have a "Haunted
Huron" theme, featuring daytime
tours of all participating buildings
and evening tours of a coupler of
"haunted" houses.
"I think it's a very cool theme. No
one else is doing it and it's a way to
set us apart," says Sickinger.
Sickinger says buildings like the
Albion Hotel in Bayfield and the
Van Egmond House in Huron East
are reputed to be haunted but he
would leave it up to each participat-
ing community to identify their own
haunted sites.
"I'm not vouching for the validity
of the hauntings and not all sites
will be haunted but that will be our
focus," he says.
While Doors Open events have so
far been offered in Huron County
uring the summer months,
ckinger says the cold and rainy
Bather that might accompany an
October event will only add to the
haunted theme.
"If it's windy, dark and dank, it
works. A dark and stormy night just
makes it more spooky," he says.
The,haunted theme will also allow
communities to include old cemeter-
ies along with buildings.
"I think the haunted walks will
bring a lot more local people as well.
I'm excited about it," he says.
Sickinger says the joint project
has attracted South Huron, Central
Huron, North Huron and Howick -
communities that have not partici-
pated before. He says ACW
(Ashfield, Colborne and Wawanosh)
is the only municipality he hasn't
heard from yet.
A meeting to be held the first
week of January will discuss which
sites each community wants to fea-
ture in the provincial pamphlet.
While only 10 sites can be fea-
tured in the provincial pamphlet,
Sickinger says all of the sites can be
listed on the Ontario Doors Open
website.
He says the event is being pro-
moted as a weekend -long visit with
overnight packages being planned
